Well it was
another brilliant weekend on the Major Professional Golf Tours from around the
world and this week it was the ISPS HANDA World Cup of Golf that was sanctioned
by the USPGA and European Tours as well as the other Major Professional Golf
Tours from around the world and it was played on the Royal Melbourne
GC, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. And the team from Australia which
consisted of Adam Scott (Australia) who scored rounds of 75+4, 68-3, 68-3 and a
final round 66-5 for a 72 hole total of 277-7 and he combined with his fellow
team mate Jason Day (Australia) who scored rounds of 68-3, 70-1, 66-5 and a final
round of 70-1 for a 72 hole total of 274-10. Their combined 72 hole totals came
to 551-17 was good enough for a ten shot win over USA. They won US $300,000
each for the win.

The two players
combined really well all week and on the final two days they just played some
awesome golf with both Jason Day (Australia) and Adam Scott (Australia) holing
out seconds shots on the front nine for eagle twos. I feel it was just meant to
be for the Australians this week. And it was first time Australia had won the world
cup since 1989. Since the World Cup of Golf began way back in 1953 Australia has
won it five times and that includes the win here. They also won it on this same
course at Royal Melbourne GC in 1959 where Peter Thomson (Australia) / Kel
Nagle (Australia) prevailed over the USA Team by the same number of shots which
was ten.

Jason Day (Australia) wins the World Cup of Golf at the age of 26 years and 12 days. This World Cup has not recognized an individual champion since Tiger Woods (USA) won in 1999 as the format was changed to strictly team play. The individual stroke-play format returned this year. The victory is Jason Day’s (Australia) first international victory since winning the 2010 HP Byron Nelson Championship on the PGA TOUR. From that victory to his win at the ISPS HANDA World Cup of Golf, Jason Day (Australia) has had 25 top-10 finishes on the USPGA TOUR, six top-10s at major championship, including three runners-up. This was Jason Day’s (Australia) first appearance in the World Cup of Golf.
Adam Scott (Australia), the other half of the Australian team continued to rebound from an opening-round 4-over-par 75 to shoot a final-round 66 and challenged for his third consecutive victory on Australian soil and his second consecutive victory at The Royal Melbourne Golf Club after winning last week’s Australian Masters. The Australian team began the day with a one-stroke heading into the final round. They finished with a 10-stroke win in the team competition. Brett Ogle (Australia) was the last Australian to win the individual competition at the World Cup of Golf. Brett Ogle (Australia) won in 1992 at La Moraleja GC in Madrid, Spain. The United States team of Fred Couples (USA) and Davis Love III won the team competition that year.
USA which
consisted of Matt Kuchar (USA) and Kevin Streelman (USA) and their combined 72
hole total was 561-7 and they finished ten shots back in solo second position. They
were going well after three rounds but fell off the pace in the final round. They
each won US $150,000 for their efforts. Denmark which consisted of Thomas Bjorn
(Denmark) and Thorbjorn Olesen (Denmark) and there 72 hole total was 563-5 and
they tied for third position with Japan who consisted of Ryo Ishikawa (Japan)
and Hideto Tanihara (Japan) who’s 72 hole total was also 563-5. These four
players each won US $12,500 for their efforts.
New Zealand’s
team consisted of Michael Hendry (NZL) who scored rounds of 75+4, 73+2, 71 even
par and 71 even par for a 72 hole total of 290+6 and the other member of the
team was Tim Wilkinson (NZL) who scored rounds of 79+8, 71 even par, 70-1 and a
final round of 73+2 for a 72 hole total of 293+9. New Zealand’s team total was
583+15 and they were 32 shots behind the winners. They ended up finishing in
tied for 20th position which was okay but I feel they could have done a lot
better.
In the
individual competition it was Jason Day (Australia) who scored rounds of 68-3,
70-1, 66-5 and a final round of 70-1 for a 72 hole total of 274-10 and he won
by two strokes for the second professional win in a major event in his career. He
won US $1,200,000 for the win but because it was unofficial money it doesn’t go
towards his 2013/14 USPGA Tour Money list ranking. Jason Day (Australia) played
a steady final round of 70-1 which included a front nine of 33-2 with an eagle
on the par four, sixth hole and birdies on the par three, third hole and par
four, fourth hole. But he bogeyed the par four, first hole and par three, fifth
hole and made the turn at minus eleven and was leading by four shots. Thomas
Bjorn (Denmark) went out in 36+1 and made the turn at minus seven and was four
shots behind the leader. Adam Scott (Australia) went out in 31-4 and made the
turn at minus six and was five shots behind the leader.

Jason Day
(Australia) played holes ten to 14 in two over par and had fallen back to minus
nine and was now tied for the lead. Thomas Bjorn (Denmark) played holes ten to
14 in two under par and had moved to minus nine and was now tied for the lead. Adam
Scott (Australia) played holes ten to 14 in one under par and moved to minus
seven and was now only two shots behind the leaders. Jason Day (Australia)
played holes 15 to 17 in one under par and moved to minus ten with just the par
four, 72nd hole to play and now was leading by one shot. Thomas Bjorn (Denmark)
played holes 15 to 17 in even par and remained at minus nine and now was one
shot behind the leader with just the par four, 72nd hole to play. Adam Scott
(Australia) played holes 15 to 17 in one under par and moved to minus eight
with just the par four, 72nd hole to play and was now only two shots behind the
leader.

(Australia) who was playing in a couple of groups ahead of the final group made
a disappointing bogey up the par four, 72nd hole and finished the 72 holes at
minus seven and was three shots behind the winner. Thomas Bjorn (Denmark) made
a very disappointing bogey up the par four 72nd hole and finished the 72 holes
on minus eight and was two shots behind the winner. Jason Day (Australia) hit a
fine drive straight down the middle of the par four, 72nd hole and landed it
right in the middle of the fairway. He struck his short wedge shot into within
twenty feet of the hole pin high. He walked up to the 72nd green knowing the
title was his. He rolled his birdie putt from twenty feet to within five feet
of the cup because in was very fast coming down the downhill slope. Then he
calmed his nerve and rolled the five footer in for his par. He scored 37+1 for
the back nine and finished the 72 holes on minus ten to win by two shots. He
celebrated by hugging his caddie and mentor Col Swatton and then got a hug from
his Mum and Sister who were also there. Then he went and got sung to by the
Australian Fans known as the Fanatics!! This win was bitter sweet for Jason Day
(Australia) who is also half Filipino because the week before he lost eight of
his relatives to Typhoon Haiyan which struck the Philippines Islands with
devastating results!!!

Jason Day (USA) has
been playing the USPGA Tour fulltime since the 2008 season. He is over long due
his second win on the USPGA Tour and maybe it will happen next year in 2014?
Perhaps it could even be at first Major Championship at which is the Master
Tournament in early April? He has won one event on the USPGA Tour in his career
to date so far and that came at the 2010 HP Byron Nelson Championship. He had
three top ten finishes in the four Major Championships this year and here they
are: Solo third at the Masters Tournament in April; tied for second at the
113th US Open Championship in June; tied for 32nd at the 142nd Open
Championship in July and tied for eighth at the 95th PGA Championship. So far
in his career his has amassed earnings of US $13,828,356 from the 136 events he
has played in so far in his career. I wish him all the best for the rest of the
2013/14 season.

Coming in solo
second position at 276-8 after 72 holes was Thomas Bjorn (Denmark); he earned
US $760,000 for his efforts but because it is unofficial money it doesn’t go
towards his 2014 Race to Dubai Money list ranking. He will be disappointed with
the way he finished off his round because he had a great chance to win with
three holes to play. He has been playing the European Tour fulltime since the
1996 season and has had some amazing success with easily keeping his card for
the following season every year since. He has won 14 events so far to date in
his European Tour Career and here they are from the first to the most recent:
1996 Loch Lomond World Invitational, 1998 Heineken Classic, 1998 Peugeot Open
de Espana, 1999 The Sarazen World Open, 2000 BMW International Open, 2001 Dubai

Masters, 2006 Nissan Irish Open, 2010 Estoril Open de Portugal, 2011 Commercialbank

His career year to date so far on the European Tour came in 2000 where he
earned € 1,929,657 from the 27 events he played in and finished fifth in the
then 2000 final European Tour Order of Merit List Standings. I wish him all the
best with the remaining events on the European Tour in the 2014 season.
Coming in solo

Day (Australia) as I mentioned earlier. Adam Scott (Australia) has been playing
on the USPGA Tour fulltime since the 2003 season and has kept his card for the
next season every season since. In that time he has career earnings of US
$33,199,065 earned from the 213 events he has played to date so far in his
career. He has also won ten times on the USPGA Tour to date in his career so
far and here they are from the first to the most recent: 2003 Deutsche
Bank Championship, 2004 THE PLAYERS Championship, Booz Allen Classic, 2006
THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola, 2007 Shell Houston Open, 2008 EDS
Byron Nelson Championship, 2010 Valero Texas Open, 2011 World Golf Championships-Bridgestone
Invitational, 2013 Masters Tournament (Maiden Major Championship) and The
Barclays. He had the best record of any player in the four Major
Championships in 2013 with winning the Masters Tournament in April; tying for
45th position at the 113th US Open Championship in June; tying for third at the
142nd Open Championship in July and tying for fifth at the 95th PGA
Championship in August. He proved this week that he has one of the solid and
most consistent Golf Swings on the USPGA Tour. I wish him all best for the rest
of the 2013/14 USPGA Tour season.

form he displayed on this course last week where he finished in solo second
position at the Australian Masters. Matt Kuchar (USA) has been playing on the
USPGA Tour full time on and off since the 2002 season and has easily kept his
card for the next season every season since except for the 2005 season. He
spent the 2006 season on the Web.com Tour and earned his 2007 USPGA Tour card
back by earning US $300,867 from the 21 events he played in and finished in
tenth position on the final 2006 Web.com Tour Money list standings. Since 2007
he has had huge success on the USPGA Tour and his current all time USPGA Tour
earnings are US $26,587,444 earned from 302 events he has played to date so far
in his career. The next step for him would be to win a Major
Championship and maybe it will happen in the next few years? He has won six
times on the USPGA Tour to date in his career so far and here they are from his
first to the most recent: 2002 The Honda Classic, 2009 Turning Stone
Resort Championship, 2010 The Barclays, 2012 THE PLAYERS Championship, 2013
World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship and the
Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide Insurance. I wish

Coming in tied for fifth position
at 281-3 after 72 holes was Ryo Ishikawa (Japan); he earned US
$ 290,000
for his efforts but because it is unofficial money it doesn’t count towards the
2013/14 USPGA Tour Money list standings. He is in his second full season of
playing the USPGA Tour fulltime. He had an average rookie season in 2012 on the
USPGA Tour by his high standards with earning US $727,051 from the 18 events he
played in and that included making ten cuts and achieving two top ten finishes
and one of them was his career best finish to date on the USPGA Tour where he
finished in second position at the Puerto Rico Open presented by
seepuertorico.com. He is still very young being only 22 years of age. He is
Japan’s young Golfing Superstar and has Rock Star Status whenever he plays on
the Japan Golf Tour having already won 12 events on that tour and here they are
from the first to the most recent: 2007 Munsingwear Open KSB Cup [Jpn], 2008
Kansai Open, Mynavi ABC Championship [Jpn], 2009 The Royal Trophy [Jpn, team],
Mizuno Open [Jpn], Sun Chlorella Open [Jpn], Fujisankei Classic [Jpn], Tokai
Classic [Jpn], 2010 The Crowns [Jpn], Fujisankei Classic [Jpn], Mitsui Sumitomo
Visa Taiheiyo Masters [Jpn] and the 2012 Mitsui Sumitomo Visa Taiheiyo Masters
[Jpn]. He finished in 13th position on the final 2013 Web.com Tour Finals
Priority Rankings and gained his full 2013/14 USPGA Tour card. He will be very
pleased with his first three tournaments to open the season with making the cut
in all three of them and achieving one top ten finish. He also in those 12
rounds has scored nine rounds in the 60’s. He seems to be taking a little bit
longer to getting used to playing on the USPGA Tour but I’m sure he isn’t too
far away from his maiden win, and perhaps it will come in the 2013/14 season? I
wish him all the best for the rest of the 2013/14 season.
The final player
to tie for fifth position was Kiradech Aphibarnrat (Thailand); he too earned US
$290,000 for his efforts but because it is unofficial money it doesn’t count
towards the 2013 Asian Tour Money list standings. He is currently leading the
Asian Tour Order of Merit for the 2013 season with US $ 1,117,074 earned from the eleven events
he has played in to date this year so far and with only three events remaining
in the 2013 season he is almost certain to win the Order of Merit Title. He is
an amazing young talent at only 24 years old and he is sure to be a great star
if he makes it on to the USPGA Tour by the distance he hits the ball and just
the style he plays the game in. I wish him all the best in the weeks to come
and I am sure he will grab any chance he gets to play the USPGA Tour with both
hands.
Coming in solo
seventh position at 282-2 after 72 holes was Hideto Tanihara (Japan); he earned
US $240,000 for his efforts but because it is unofficial money it doesn’t count
towards the 2013 Asian Tour Money list standings. He is having a fine season on
the Japan Golf Tour in the 2013 season with already earning ￥73,934,436 from the
twenty one events he has played to date this year so far and current lies in
sixth position on the money list with two events remaining. This finish will
give him a lot of confidence heading into the final two events. I wish him all
the best for the rest of the 2013 season.
Rounding out the
top ten in tied for eighth position at 283-1 after 72 holes was David Hearn
(Canada); he earned US $ 197,500 for his efforts but because it
is unofficial money it doesn’t count towards the 2013/14 USPGA Tour Money list
standings. David Hearn (Canada) has
been playing the USPGA Tour fulltime on and off since the 2004 season after
gaining his card by finishing in tied for 21st position at the 2004 PGA TOUR
Qualifying Tournament. In his rookie season in the 2005 season he played really
poor with only making ten cuts from the twenty four events he played in and
achieved no top ten finishes. He only earned US $197,453 and found himself back
on the Web.com Tour for the 2006 – 2010 seasons. In 2010 he had a very good
season on the Web.com Tour with earning US $230,440 from the 25 events he
played in and that included making 16 cuts and achieving five top ten finishes.
He finished in twenty first position on the final 2010 Web.com Tour Money list
standings and gained back his full USPGA Tour card for the 2011 season. In 2011
in his second try at USPGA Tour fulltime he had a much better season with
earning US $869,072 from the 26 events he played in and achieved three top ten
finishes, he easily kept his card for the 2012 season. In 2012 he had an even
better season with earning US $1,012,575 from the 28 events he played in and he
achieved two top ten finishes, again easily keeping his card for the 2013
season. In 2013 he had his best ever season to date on the USPGA Tour with
earning US $1,171,515 from the twenty six events he played in and finished in
75th position on the final 2013 USPGA Tour Money list standings. Perhaps his
maiden win on the USPGA Tour will come in the 2013/14 season?
Also tied for eighth position was Stuart Manley (Wales); he too earned US
$ 197,500
for his efforts but because it is unofficial money it doesn’t count towards the
2014 Race to Dubai Money list standings. His highlight of the tournament came
in the third round on Saturday where he holed in one on the par three, third
hole and thought he had won a brand new car only to find out the prize was only
on offer in the final round on Sunday. That must have upset him because he made
an eleven on the next hole which was the par four, fourth hole. But on the
whole he will be pleased with his performance this week against this high class
field. Since 2004 he has been playing the Challenge Tour and European Tour on
and off. He has had three full seasons playing the European Tour Fulltime
without much success in 2005, 2008 and 2011. Last year he had a very good
season on the Challenge Tour with earning € 71,996 from the twenty one events he played in and he finished
in 19th position on the final 2013 Challenge Tour Rankings but unfortunately
just missed out on his 2014 European Tour card. But he went to the 2013 Final
European Tour qualifying school tournament and finished in tenth position to
gain his full playing rights for the 2014 European Tour and Race to Dubai. Let’s
hope this gives him the confidence to have a good start to his season? I wish
him all the best for the rest of the 2014 season.
Also tied for eighth position was Kevin Streelman (USA); he too earned US
$ 197,500
for his efforts but because it is unofficial money it doesn’t count towards the
2013/14 USPGA Tour Money list standings. He will be pleased with this result
considering it is his first time playing golf down under in Australia but at
the same time he will be disappointed with his poor play over the weekend after
starting so well on Thursday and Friday. Kevin Streelman (USA) first qualified
for the USPGA Tour by finishing in tied for 14th position at the 2007 PGA TOUR
Qualifying Tournament which gave him his full USPGA Tour card for the 2008
season. In his rookie season on the USPGA Tour he played in 32 events and made
24 cuts and that included four top ten finishes with his best result being a
tied for fourth position at the Barclays and he finished the year in 78th
position on the final 2008 USPGA Tour Money list standings with US $ 1,352,705
earned from the 32 events he played in. In 2009 he performed well again with
playing in 29 events and making 19 cuts and achieving two top ten finishes with
his best result being a tied for third place at the Mayakoba Golf Classic at
Riviera Maya-Cancun. He finished the year at 91st position on the final 2009
USPGA Tour Money list standings with US $ 1,007,444 earned from 29 events he
played in. In 2010 he had a very good season on the USPGA Tour with playing in
28 events and making 17 cuts and he achieved five top ten finishes with his
best results being tied for third position at both the Puerto Rico Open
presented by Banco Popular and the Barclays. He finished in 62nd position on
the final 2010 USPGA Tour Money list standings with US $ 1,472,349 earned from
the 28 events he played in.
In 2011 he had
another very solid season on the USPGA Tour with playing in 26 events and
making 19 cuts and recording four top ten finishes with his best being a tied
for sixth placing at both the Travelers Championship and the McGladrey Classic.
He finished in 72nd position on the final 2011 USPGA Tour Money list standings
with US $ 1,300,006 earned from the 26 events he played in. In 2012 he had his
poorest year on the USPGA Tour since he qualified in 2008. He played in 26
events and made 18 cuts and achieved three top ten finishes with his best
result being a tied for eighth placing at the John Deere Classic. He finished
in 107th position on the final 2012 USPGA Tour Money list standings with US $ 893,736
earned from the 26 events he played in. In 2013 he had his best year to date on
the USPGA Tour with win his maiden USPGA Tour event at the Tampa Bay
Championship presented by EverBank in mid march. He earned US $3,088,284 from
the twenty five events he played in and finished in 17th position on the final
2013 USPGA Tour Money list standings. I wish him all the best for the rest of
the 2013/14 USPGA Tour season.
The final player
to tie for eighth position was Francesco Molinari (Italy); he too earned US $ 197,500
for his efforts but because it is unofficial money it doesn’t count towards the
2014 Race to Dubai Money list standings. He will be very pleased with his
second and third rounds because they were in the mid 60’s. But will be
disappointed with his first and final rounds because they were in the mid 70’s.
He has been playing on the European Tour Fulltime since the 2005 season with
easily keeping his card for the next season every season since. His career year
on the European Tour came in the 2010 season where he earned € 2,799,692 from
the 27 events he played in and finished in fifth position on the 2010 Final
Race to Dubai Money list standings. He has won three events so far in his
career on the European Tour and here they are from the first to the most
recent: The 2006 Telecom Italia Open, the 2010 WGC - HSBC Champions and the
2012 Reale Seguros Open de España. I wish him all the best for the 2014
European Tour season.
Best of the two
New Zealand Golfers in the field and representing New Zealand for the first
time at the World Cup of Golf was Michael Hendry (NZL) who scored rounds of
75+4, 73+2, 71 even par and 71 even par for a 72 hole total of 290+6 and he
tied for 38th position. After a mediocre start he produced two fine even par
rounds at the weekend. He must gain a lot of confidence from playing in a field
with such high calibre golfers? In the 2013 season he has been playing on three
tours full time. He currently lies in third position on the PGA Tour of
Australasia with AU $ 118,782.71 earned
from the five events he has played in and just the Emirates Australian Open
remaining to complete the season. He currently lies in 45th position on the One
Asia Tour US $24,232.21 earned from the four events he has played in with two
events left in the season. He currently lies in 70th position on the Japan Golf
Tour Money list standings with ￥11,941,337
earned from the 16 events he has played in with two events remaining. He has
had a very good season and continues to improve with being New Zealand’s Number
one ranked golfer on the official world rankings list. I wish him all the best
for the rest of the 2013 season.
Tim Wilkinson
(NZL) was the other member of the New Zealand team he scored rounds of 79+8, 71
even par, 70-1 and a final round of 73+2 for a 72 hole total of 293+9 and he tied
for 46th position. He will be very disappointed will his first round after
achieving a top ten finish the previous week at the OHL Classic at Mayakoba. But
at the same time he will be pleased with his middle two rounds. Tim Wilkinson
(NZL) has been playing the USPGA Tour on and off since the 2008 season after
gaining his 2008 USPGA Tour card by finishing in tied for 14th position at the
2007 PGA TOUR Qualifying Tournament. He had a fine rookie season in 2008 on the
USPGA Tour with earning US $1,167,607 from the twenty nine events he played in
and achieved three top ten finishes which included a career best to date of
tied for second at the Valero Texas Open. He finished in 92nd position on the
final 2008 USPGA Tour Money list standings and easily retained his full playing
status for the 2009 USPGA Tour season. The 2009 season wasn’t as good for him
as he suffered a torn ligament in his right thumb and it required surgery. He
only managed to play in 14 events where he earned US $297,008 and achieved
another top ten finish at the Verizon Heritage where he tied for sixth
position. He finished in 173rd position on the final 2009 USPGA Tour Money list
standings but because he missed the second half of the season due to injury he
played the 2010 USPGA Tour season on a Major Medical Extension, he had 12
events to earn US $365,675 (coupled with US $297,008 he earned in 2009). But he
was only able to earn $160,706 in 15 events and he had to earn the US $365,675
he was required to keep his full playing status and hence he lost his card and
was forced back to play on the Web.com Tour.
In 2011 he played a full schedule on the
Web.com Tour and earned US $92,747 from the twenty three events he played in
which included two top ten finishes but he finished outside the top twenty five
money earners and failed to achieve his 2012 USPGA Tour card. He went to the
2011 PGA TOUR Qualifying Tournament where he finished in tied for 72nd position
and gained his 2012 Web.com Tour card. In 2012 he had an average season on the
Web.com Tour with earning US $100,862 from the twenty seven events he played in
which included two top ten finishes. But again he finished outside the top
twenty five money earners and missed out on his 2013 USPGA Tour card. He went
to the 2012 PGA TOUR Qualifying Tournament where he finished in tied for 49th
position and gained his 2013 Web.com Tour card. In 2013 he had a very good
season on the Web.com Tour with earning US $246,540 from the 19 events he
played in and that included achieving six top ten finishes. He finished in 38th
position on the final 2013 Web.Com Tour Finals Priority Rankings list and
gained his 2013/14 Full USPGA Tour card under the new qualifying format. I wish
him every continuing success for the rest of the 2013/14 USPGA Tour season.
Next week the
Major Event is on the PGA Tour of Australasia and is the Emirates Australian
Open and is played on the Royal Sydney Golf Club, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

Masters a week ago and this past week finished in solo third position in the
individual competition at the ISPS HANDA World Cup of Golf with 9.80
Official Golf World Ranking Points; coming in at Number Three is Henrik Stenson
(Sweden) who won the Tour Championship by Coca – Cola and also the 2013 FedEx
Cup over two months ago and won DP World Tour Championship, Dubai and the 2013
Race to Dubai Title a week ago with 8.94 Official Golf World Ranking Points;
coming in at Number Four is Phil Mickelson (USA) who won the Open Championship
four months ago with 7.70 Official Golf World Ranking Points and rounding out
the top 5 on the Official Golf World Ranking Points list this week is Justin
Rose (England) who won his maiden Major Championship at the 113th US Open
Championship five months ago and also finished in tied for third position at

HANDA World Cup of Golf this past week is the highest ranked New Zealand
Golfer in the world for the Fortieth second straight week of his career. This
week he slips one place and falls to 215th position on the Official World Golf
Rankings Points list with 0.87 Official Golf World Ranking Points.
