Well it was another excellent weekend on the Major
Professional Golf Tours from around the world and this week the USPGA Tour and
FedEx Cup headed to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida for the richest event of the
season on the USPGA Tour and it was THE PLAYERS Championship and it was played
on the TPC Sawgrass, Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. The first round was
played on Thursday 8th May in calm and sunny conditions with the temperature in
the mid 80s. Martin Kaymer (Germany) scored an excellent first round 63-9 which
was bogey free and included a front nine of 29-7 which was the lowest front
nine ever recorded on this course since the Championship came here in 1982 and
he was leading by two shots. Two shots back scoring 65-7 was Russell Henley
(USA). Three shots back scoring 66-6 was Sang – Moon Bae (South Korea). Four
shots back and all scoring 67-5 were a large group of players that included Lee
Westwood (England), Brian Stuard (USA), Gonzalo Fdez – Castano (Spain), Gary
Woodland (USA), young American Superstar, Jordan Spieth (USA), Scott Stallings
(USA), Justin Rose (England) and Sergio Garcia (Spain). Five shots back scoring
68-4 were Ernie Els (RSA), Dustin Johnson (USA), Bill Haas (USA) and Brendon de
Jonge (Zimbabwe). Six shots back on 69-3 were Zach Johnson (USA), Graeme
McDowell (NIR) and two time Masters Tournament winner, Bubba Watson (USA)
making his first appearance since winning the Master Tournament a month ago.
Seven shots back scoring 70-2 were Rory McILroy (NIR), Matt Jones (Australia),
Angel Cabrera (Argentina), John Senden (Australia), Jim Furyk (USA) and Freddie
Jacobson (Sweden). Patrick Reed (USA) scored a disappointing 74+2 along with
Ian Poulter (England). Phil Mickelson (USA) scored 75+3 which was a poor start
for him and Webb Simpson (USA) scored that score as well, as did the current
FedEx Cup points leader, Jimmy Walker (USA). Last week’s winner J. B. Holmes
(USA) scored 76+4 along with Matt Every (USA). Two players that will be very
disappointed with their opening rounds were Louis Oosthuizen (RSA) and world
number two, Adam Scott (Australia) who scored 77+5 to languish 14 shots off the
lead heading into round two. Mark Wilson (USA) brought up the rear of the field
scoring 79+7.
The second round was played on Friday 9th May in
overcast conditions with some sun and only light wind conditions and the
Temperature was in the mid 80s again. Martin Kaymer (Germany) scored 69-3 to go
along with his course record equalling 63-9 in the first round and he was on
132-12 after 36 holes and lead by one shot. One shot back of the lead on 133-11
was young American Super star, Jordan Spieth (USA) who scored a bogey free 66-6
in his second round which was also the low round of the day. Four shots back on
136-8 was Russell Henley (USA). Six shots back on 138-6 were Jim Furyk (USA),
Lee Westwood (England), Gary Woodland (USA), Justin Rose (England) and Sergio
Garcia (Spain). Seven Shots back on 137-5 were Brian Davis (England), John
Senden (Australia), Bill Haas (USA), Sang – Moon Bae (South Korea), George
McNeill (USA), Geoff Ogilvy (Australia), Matt Jones (Australia), Kevin Na
(South Korea), Charl Schwartzel (RSA) and Scott Brown (USA). The 36 hole cut
fell at 144 even par with 82 players making it. Notable players to miss the cut
were Keegan Bradley (USA), Phil Mickelson (USA) along with Chesson Hadley (USA)
who were all 145+1. Also to miss the cut on 146+2 were Jerry Kelly (USA) Robert
Garrigus (USA). On 147+3 were Kerry Perry (USA) and Michael Thompson (USA). On
148+4 were Webb Simpson (USA) and Harris English (USA). And a real surprise to
miss the cut was Patrick Reed (USA) on 153+9.
The third round was played on Saturday 10th May again
in overcast conditions with some sun and only light wind conditions and the
temperature was in the mid 80s again. Martin Kaymer (Germany) only managed a 72
even par to go along with his first round 63-9 and his second round 69-3 and
was on 204-12 after 54 holes and was tied for the lead with young American
Super star ,Jordan Spieth (USA) who scored another bogey free round of 71-1 to
go along with his 67-5 in the first round which was blemish free and 66-6 in
the second round which was also blemish free and he was the other player tied
for the 54 hole lead on 204-12. Three shots back on 207-9 were John Senden
(Australia) and Sergio Garcia (Spain). Four shots back on 208-8 were Matt Jones
(Australia), George McNeill (USA) and Gary Woodland (USA). Five shots back on
209-7 were Francesco Molinari (Italy) who scored the equal low round of the day
which was 67-5; David Hearn (Canada) and Lee Westwood (England) were also on
that score. Six shots back on 210-6 were Stewart Cink (USA) and Jim Furyk
(USA). Seven shots back on 211-5 were Matt Kuchar (USA) who was the 2012
Players Champion along the current Masters Tournament Champion, Bubba Watson
(USA). Nine shots back on 213-3 were the Current World Number Two Golfer and
recently married, Adam Scott (Australia) along with former Number One, Rory
McILroy (NIR). The real surprise of the third round was Russell Henry (USA) who
scored a shocking round of 80+8 to fall back to 12 shots off the lead at 216
even par.
The final round was played on Sunday 11th May in overcast
conditions with some sun shining through the clouds and later in the afternoon
there was about a 90 minute rain delay due to lightening in the area and the
temperature was in the mid 70’s. Martin Kaymer (Germany) scored a steady final
round of 71-1 to go along with his first round 63-9, second round 69-3 and
third round 72 even par for a 72 hole total of 275-13 and he won by a single
shot for his first ever PLAYERS Championship win and his second win on the
USPGA Tour of his career. Martin Kaymer (Germany) won US $1,800,000 for his
efforts and moved to eleventh position on the current 2013/14 USPGA Tour Money
list standings with US $2,274,657 earned from the ten events he has played to
date this season so far. Bubba Watson (USA) still leads that list with US
$4,557,079 earned from the ten events he has played to date this season so far.
Martin Kaymer (Germany) also earned 600 FedEx Cup Points for his efforts and
moved to 18th position on the current FedEx Cup Points list standings with 871
points earned from the ten events he has played to date this season so far and
he is 1,270 points behind current the leader of that list who is Jimmy Walker
(USA) who has earned 2,141 points from the 16 events he has played to date this
season so far. From the ten events he has played to date this season so far he
has made eight cuts and achieved two top ten finishes which includes the win
here.
Martin Kaymer (Germany) played a steady final round
under the circumstances of the occasion. He scored 71-1 which included a front
nine of 34-2 which included birdies on the par five, second hole and par five,
ninth hole and he made the turn at minus 14 and was leading by two shots. Jim
Furyk (USA) went out in 32-4 and made the turn at minus ten and was four shots
behind the leader. Sergio Garcia (Spain) went out in 34-2 and made the turn at
minus eleven and was three shots behind the leader. Justin Rose (England) went
out in 33-3 and made the turn at minus ten and was four shots behind the
leader. Jordan Spieth (USA) went out in 36 even par and made the turn at minus
12 and was two shots behind the leader.
Martin Kaymer (Germany) played holes ten to 14 in one
under par and moved to minus 15 and was now leading by four shots. Jim Furyk
(USA) played holes ten to 14 in one under par and moved to minus eleven and was
still four shots behind the leader. Sergio Garcia (Spain) played holes ten to
14 in one over par and fell back to minus ten and now was five shots behind the
leader. Justin Rose (England) played holes ten to 14 in three over par and fell
back to minus seven and was now eight shots behind the leader. Jordan Speith
(USA) played holes ten to 14 in two over par and fell back to minus ten and was
now five shots behind the leader.
There was then a 90 minute rain delay because of
lightening in the area. Then play resumed at just around 7:10pm local time. Martin
Kaymer (Germany’s) first hole after the rain delay was the 15th hole and he hit
a bad hook with his tee shot and landed in the trees on the left hand side and
was faced with a difficult second shot from the pine needles. He struck the
second shot with his five iron okay but it hooked too much and landed in the
rough leaving a very difficult third shot over the left green side bunker. He
chose to go with a high flop shot for his third. He caught it slightly heavy
and it landed in the bunker. He splashed the green side bunker shot out and it
rolled about twenty feet past the pin. He made a good attempt at his bogey putt
but it just missed on the right hand side and he had to settle for double bogey
six and he had fallen back to minus 13 and now was only leading by two shots. Jim
Furyk (USA) made a solid par at the par four, 15th hole and remained at minus
eleven and was now only two shots behind the leader. Sergio Garcia (Spain) made
a solid par at the par four, 15th hole and remained at minus ten and was now
only three shots behind the leader. Justin Rose (England) made a very good
birdie at the par four, 15th hole and moved to minus eight and now was only
five shots behind the leader. Jordan Spieth (USA) made a poor bogey at the par
four, 15th hole and fell back to minus nine and was now only four shots behind
the leader.
Martin Kaymer (Germany) hit a brilliant drive down
the par five, 16th hole. He had a mid iron for his second shot and he slightly
pulled it to the left and it landed pin high to the left of the green in the
fringe. He made a poor decision with his third shot when he chose the putter rather
than playing a chip shot with one of his wedges. He left his putt from the
fringe twenty five feet short but he managed to two putt from there for his par
five and remained at minus 13 heading to the island green, par three, 17th hole
and was now only leading by a single stroke. Jim Furyk (USA) made a good birdie
on the par five, 16th hole and moved to minus 12 and now was only one shot off
the leader heading to the island green, par three, 17th hole. Sergio Garcia
(Spain) made a par at the par five, 17th hole and remained at minus ten heading
to the island green, par three, 17th hole and was still three shots behind the
leader. Justin Rose (England) made a par at the par five, 16th hole and
remained at minus eight heading to the island green, par three, 17th hole and
was still five shots behind the leader. Jordan Spieth (USA) made a good birdie
at the par five, 16th hole and moved to minus ten heading to the island green,
par three, 17th hole and was now only three shots off the lead.
Martin Kaymer (Germany) hit what he thought was a
good tee shot to the Island Green par three, 17th hole and it landed in the
middle of the green but then spun viciously back to the front of the green and
came to rest in the cut of rough around the island green that stopped balls
from going in the water. He was now faced with an extremely difficult second
shot from the rough at the front of the green to chip the ball close to the far
front right pin placement. The problem was the slope at the top of the ridge;
he just had to get the ball trickling down off it too the hole. He hit what he
thought was a perfect chip shot to the top of the ridge but instead of it
trickling off the ridge down to the hole it stopped on top of it and left him
with an extremely difficult left to right breaking putt from about 30 feet for
his par. He took a bit of time over the 30 foot putt and then put a brilliant
stroke on it and it rolled on the perfect line at the perfect speed and it fell
in for his par three!! He pumped his first in the air to acknowledge he had
just made the par save of the tournament and he remained at minus 13 and was
still leading by a single shot heading to the difficult par four, 72nd hole. Jim
Furyk (USA) made a solid par at the island green, par three, 17th hole and
remained at minus 12 one shot behind the leader with just the difficult par
four, 72nd hole remaining. Sergio Garcia (Spain) made a solid par at the island
green, par three, 17th hole and remained at minus ten and was still three shots
behind the leader with just the difficult par four, 72nd hole remaining. Justin
Rose (England) made a brilliant birdie two at the island green, par three, 17th
hole and moved to minus nine and was now only four shots off the leader with
just the difficult par four, 72nd hole remaining. Jordan Spieth (USA) made a
solid par at the island green, par three, 17th hole and remained at minus ten
and was still three shots behind the leader with just the difficult par four,
72nd hole remaining.
Jim Furyk (USA) who was playing a few groups ahead
of the final group made a fine birdie at the very difficult par four, 72nd hole
and finished the 72 holes at minus 12 and finished one shot behind the winner. Justin
Rose (England) who was playing a couple of groups ahead of the final group made
a fine birdie up the very difficult par four, 72nd hole and finished the 72
holes at minus ten and was three shots behind the winner. Sergio Garcia (Spain)
who was playing in the group ahead of the final group made a fine birdie at the
very difficult par four, 72nd hole and finished the 72 holes at minus eleven
and was two shots behind the winner. Jordan Spieth (USA) who was playing in the
final group with Martin Kaymer (Germany) made a solid par up the very difficult
par four, 72nd hole and finished the 72 holes at minus ten and was three shots
behind the winner. Martin Kaymer (Germany) stood on the very difficult par
four, 72nd tee with a one shot lead knowing that a par would earn him the
victory. He hit a brilliant drive that faded off the water hazard on the left
hand side and landed right in the middle of the fairway leaving a middle iron
for his second shot. He struck his second shot as darkness was falling and
caught it slightly heavy coming up a few metres short of the green. He chose a
putter for his third shot from just off the green and hit a good putt that
almost went in the hole but it rolled about four feet past the holing leaving a
nervy four foot putt that broke slightly left to right to win the tournament. He
calmed his nerves then put an excellent stroke on the four foot putt for his
par and it fell right in the centre of the cup and he had won THE PLAYERS
Championship!! He scored 37+1 on his back nine. He gave his caddie, Craig
Connelly who is from Scotland a huge high five and hug to celebrate!!
Craig Connelly on the left who is Martin Kaymer's (Germany) caddie embaces Martin Kaymer (Germany) on the right after he holed the winning putt!! |
Then he was interviewed by the NBC Sports/Golf
Channel commentator and he told him “He was so happy to win this tournament on
Mother’s Day because it brings back fine memories of his Mother who passed away
from skin cancer in 2008. And he was also so pleased to get a win because he
had been striking the ball well all year”. This is his second season playing on
the USPGA Tour fulltime. He gained his full 2013 USPGA Tour card by winning the
2010 USPGA Championship which was his maiden Major Championship. But he had a
poor 2013 season on the USPGA Tour by his standards with only earning US $882,937
from the 17 events he played in and he finished in 94th position on the final
2013 USPGA Tour Money list standings. He also plays the European Tour fulltime
and has achieved ten wins already on that tour and here they are from the first
to the most recent: 2008 Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, 2008 BMW International
Open, 2009 Open de France ALSTOM, 2009 The Barclays Scottish Open, 2010 Abu
Dhabi Golf Championship, 2010 US PGA CHAMPIONSHIP, 2010 KLM Open, 2010 Alfred
Dunhill Links Championship, 2011 Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship and the 2011 WGC
- HSBC Champions. Now he has two wins on the USPGA Tour he will gain even more
confidence and I feel he will have a good chance to win the second Major
Championship of the year which is the US Open Championship in June next month.
I wish him all the best for the rest of the 2013/14 season.
Coming in solo second position at 276-12 after 72 holes was Jim Furyk (USA);
he earned US $1,080,000 for his efforts and moved to seventh position on the
current 2013/14 USPGA Tour Money list standings with US $2,839,637 earned from
the ten events he has played to date this season so far. He also earned 330
FedEx Cup Points for his efforts and moved to tenth position on the current
2013/14 FedEx Cup Points list standings with 1,099 points earned from the ten
events he has played to date this season to date so far. From the ten events he
has played to date this season so far he has made ten cuts and achieved five
top ten finishes that includes the one here. He will be happy with his second
and final rounds that were in the 60’s but disappointed with his first and
third rounds that were in the 70’s. Jim Furyk (USA) has been playing on the
USPGA Tour fulltime since the 1994 season. 2012 was a year of missed chances
for him with his narrow misses at winning the US Open Championship and couple
of other tournaments. But he hasn’t won on the USPGA Tour since the 2010 THE
TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola and he also won the FedEx Cup that
year as well. But he has won 16 tournaments in his USPGA Tour career to
date so far and that includes his maiden Major Championship which came at the
2003 US Open Championship. I feel his 17th win will come very soon and maybe it
could be his second Major Championship win at the second Major Championship of
the 2014 season which is U.S. Open Championship in two months time? I wish him
all the best for the rest of the 2013/14 USPGA Tour season.
Coming in solo third position at 277-11 after 72
holes was Sergio Garcia (Spain); he earned US $680,000 for his efforts and
moved to 15th position on the current 2013/14 USPGA Tour Money list standings
with US $2,047,867 earned from the eighth events he has played to date this
season so far. He also earned 210 FedEx Cup Points for his efforts and
moved to twenty fifth position on the
current 2013/14 FedEx Cup Points list standings with 802 points earned from the
eighth events he has played to date this season so far. From the eight events
he has played to date this season so far he has made seven cuts and achieved
five top ten finishes which includes the one here. He will be happy with his
first and third rounds that were in the 60s but just content with his second
and final rounds that were in the 70s. He has been playing on the USPGA Tour
fulltime since the 2000 season and in the time he has easily kept his card for
the next year every season since and he has achieved eight wins on the USPGA
Tour in his career so far and here they are from the first to the most recent: 2001
MasterCard Colonial, Buick Classic 2002 Mercedes Championships, 2004
EDS Byron Nelson Championship, Buick Classic, 2005 Booz Allen
Classic. 2008 THE PLAYERS Championship and the 2012 Wyndham
Championship. He has current career earnings on the USPGA Tour of US
$34,881,580 earned from the 268 events he has played to date in his career so
far. I feel his ninth win isn’t too far off and maybe it could be his maiden
Major Championship win at the U.S. Open Championship which is next month? I
wish him all the best for the 2013/14 USPGA Tour season.
The final player to tie for fourth position was Jordan Spieth (USA); he too earned US $440,000 for his efforts and moved to fifth position on the current 2013/14 USPGA Tour Money list standings with US $3,171,423 earned from the 14 events he has played to date this year so far. He also earned 135 FedEx Cup Points for his efforts and moved to sixth position on the current 2013/14 FedEx Cup Points list standings with 1,308 points earned from the 14 events he has played to date this season so far. From the 14 events he has played to date this season so far he has made 12 cuts and achieved six top ten finishes that includes the one here. He will be extremely happy with his first two rounds that were in the mid 60s but very disappointed with his weekend play that was in the 70s especially his final round that was 74+2 when he had a share of the 54 hole lead. He has now been in great position to win the first two huge events of the 2014 season and not been able to get over the line in either one. But I am sure he won’t let it get him down and will achieve his second USPGA Tour win very soon. Jordan Spieth (USA) made people really take notice of him in his first ever USPGA Tour event he played as a 16 year old Amateur at the 2010 HP Byron Nelson Championship where he scored rounds of 68-2, 69-1, 67-3 and a final round of 72+2 for a 72 hole total of 276-4 and he tied for 16th position while still attending the University of Texas. In the 2011 HP Byron Nelson Championship he played in it again as a 17 year old Amateur and this time he scored rounds of 69-1, 68-2, 72+2 and a 77+7 which was played in extremely windy conditions for a 72 hole total of 286+6 and he tied for 32nd position. In 2012 he played in five more USPGA Tour events as an Amateur and made the cut in three of them with his best finish being tied for 21st at the 112th US Open Championship and he also achieved low Amateur Honours. He decided to turn professional in December of 2012 in the midst of his sophomore year at the University of Texas. He Monday qualified and got a few sponsor’s exemptions to play on the USPGA Tour in the early part of the 2013 season. And he managed to win the John Deere Classic in a five hole playoff in mid July which gave him full membership on the USPGA Tour till the end of 2015. That win he achieved at the John Deere Classic also earned him the last invitation into The Open Championship in Muirfield, Scotland, that week. He joined 27 other players on the John Deere Classic's chartered jet from Moline, Ill., to Scotland. He also is now exempt on the USPGA Tour till the end of the 2014/15 season. He won the 2013 USPGA Tour rookie of the year award. And last year he played on the winning US Presidents Cup Team after getting selected as a Captains pick for the US Presidents Cup Team. He is just an Amazing talent and now he has got his maiden USPGA Tour win I feel he can only go from strength to strength. It is amazing to think that before the start of the 2013 USPGA Tour Season he had no status on the USPGA Tour at all. Let’s hope he can continue this fine form throughout the 2014 part of the 2013/14 USPGA Tour season? I am sure with this performance this past week at the PLAYERS Championship will only make him a stronger player and perhaps he could win his maiden Major Championship at the U.S Open Championship in June. He is sure to be a Superstar in World Golf for many years to come. I wish him all the best for the rest of 2013/14 season.
Rounding out the top ten in tied for sixth position at 279-9 after 72 holes was Jimmy Walker (USA); he earned US $313,000 for his efforts and remained in second position on the current 2013/14 USPGA Tour Money list standings with US $4,538,071 earned from the 16 events he has played to date this season so far. He also earned 95 FedEx Cup Points for his efforts and remained in first position on the current 2013/14 FedEx Cup Points list standings with 2,141 points earned from the 16 events he has played to date this season so far. From the 16 events he has played to date this season so far he has made 14 cuts and achieved six top ten finishes which includes the one here and also his three wins that include his maiden USPGA Tour win that came at the Frys.com Open in mid October last year and his second win at the Sony Open in Hawaii in early January and his third win in early February at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro – Am. He will be very happy with his second and final rounds where he scored 68-4 and 65-7 but will be very disappointed with his first round 75+3 and his average third round of 71-1. But it was great to see him have another top ten finish in such a huge event and show great courage to come back from his first round 75+3. It proves to me that he is now a real force on the USPGA Tour and will more than likely play himself onto the Ryder Cup Team for Team USA in late September in Scotland this year. Jimmy Walker (USA) is just having a dream start to the 2013/14 USPGA Tour season with getting three wins already in his first 16 starts. Jimmy Walker (USA) has been playing on the USPGA Tour fulltime for the last five seasons easily keeping his card each season. In his last two seasons on the USPGA Tour he has made at least one million US dollars in each. He now gets to play in the USPGA Championship in mid August. This win will also give him heaps of confidence to know now he truly belongs out here and it shows that all the perseverance and hard work he has put in during his career to date has paid off. I hope he can have many more top five finishes before the season is over and perhaps even win a WGC – Event or even a Major Championship? I wish him all the best for the rest of the 2013/14 season.
Also tied for sixth position was Rory McILroy (NIR); he too earned US $313,000 for his efforts and moved to twenty first position on the current 2013/14 USPGA Tour Money list standings with US $1,787,840 earned from the eight events he has played to date this season so far. He also earned 95 FedEx Cup Points for his efforts and moved to 33rd position on the current 2013/14 FedEx Cup Points list standings with 732 points earned from the eight events he has played to date this year so far. From the eight events he has played to date this season so far he has made eight cuts and achieved six top ten finishes which includes the one here. He will be extremely pleased with his weekend rounds that were in the 60s especially his last round that was 66-6. He would be happy with his first round 70-2 but extremely disappointed with his second round 74+2 that really cost him any chance of winning the golf tournament. He now still hasn’t won on the USPGA Tour since he changed his golf equipment to Nike in late 2012. He has been playing the USPGA Tour Fulltime for the last three season’s including this one and in 2012 he won the 2012 Final USPGA Tour Money list with US $8,047,952 earned from the 16 events he played in and that included four wins and one was his second Major Championship win which came at the 2012 USPGA Championship. His 2013 USPGA Tour Season wasn’t so good as he was trying to get used to his new Nike Golf Clubs, he finished in 41st position on the final 2013 USPGA Tour Money list standings with US $ 1,802,443 earned from the 16 events he played in which was poor by his high standards. Here are his six wins to date on the USPGA Tour so far from the first to the most recent: 2010 Quail Hollow Championship, 2011 U.S. Open (Maiden Major Championship), 2012 The Honda Classic, PGA Championship (Second Major Championship), Deutsche Bank Championship and the BMW Championship. So far in his USPGA Tour career he has amassed US $16,947,843 in the 78 events he has played so far in his career. I feel his seventh USPGA Tour win is not very far off and perhaps it will be his third Major Championship win at the U.S. Open in June? I wish him all the best for the rest of the 2013/14 season.
Also tied for sixth
position was David Hearn (Canada); he too earned US $313,000 for his efforts and moved
to 63rd position on the current 2013/14 USPGA Tour Money list standings with US
$886,969 earned from the 18 events he has played to date this season so far. He
also earned 95 FedEx Cup Points for his efforts and moved to 66th position on
the current 2013/14 FedEx Cup Points list standings with 480 points earned from
the 18 events he has played to date this season so far. From the 18 events he
has played to date this season so far he has made 12 cuts and achieved three
top ten finishes which includes the one here. He will be happy with his four
rounds this week on the whole especially his third round that was 68-4 and his
other three rounds that were in the low 70’s. David Hearn (Canada) has been playing the USPGA Tour fulltime on and off
since the 2004 season after gaining his card by finishing in tied for 21st
position at the 2004 PGA TOUR Qualifying Tournament. In his rookie season in
the 2005 season he played really poor with only making ten cuts from the twenty
four events he played in and achieved no top ten finishes. He only earned US $197,453
and found himself back on the Web.com Tour for the 2006 – 2010 seasons. In 2010
he had a very good season on the Web.com Tour with earning US $230,440 from the
25 events he played in and that included making 16 cuts and achieving five top
ten finishes. He finished in twenty first position on the final 2010 Web.com
Tour Money list standings and gained back his full USPGA Tour card for the 2011
season. In 2011 in his second try at USPGA Tour fulltime he had a much better
season with earning US $869,072 from the 26 events he played in and achieved
three top ten finishes, he easily kept his card for the 2012 season. In 2012 he
had an even better season with earning US $1,012,575 from the 28 events he
played in and he achieved two top ten finishes, again easily keeping his card
for the 2013 season. And last year he had his best season ever in the four
seasons he had been playing on the USPGA Tour fulltime with earnings of US $ 1,171,515 earned from the twenty six events he played in and he finished
in 75th position on the final 2013 USPGA Tour Money list standings. So let’s
hope he can have an even better season in his fifth full season on the USPGA
Tour fulltime and perhaps even his maiden win on the USPGA Tour will come in
the 2013/14 season? I wish him all the best for the rest of the 2013/14 USPGA
Tour season.
The final player to tie
for sixth position was Francesco Molinari (Italy); but because he isn’t a
current member of the 2013/14 USPGA Tour he doesn’t get a current Money list or
FedEx Cup Ranking. From the four events he has played on the USPGA Tour so far
this season he has made four cuts and achieved one top ten finish so far that
came in this event. He will be very happy with his third round 67-5 but just
content with his other three rounds that were all in the low 70s. Francesco
Molinari (Italy) has been playing on the European Tour fulltime since gaining
his card at the 2005 Qualifying School. He has kept his card for the next year
every season since and has achieved three wins with his last coming at the 2012
Reale Seguros Open de Espana. He has also represented the European Team at the
Ryder Cup in 2010 and 2012 where they beat Team USA both times. I wish him all
the best for the rest of the 2014 season whatever tour he plays on.
Next week the USPGA Tour and FedEx Cup heads back to
the State of Texas for the second and final Texas Swing of the 2013/14 USPGA
Tour season and the first event of the two in the second Texas Swing is the HP Byron
Nelson Championship and it is played on the TPC Four Seasons
Resort, Irving, Texas. It carries a large prize purse of US $6,900,000
for the taking. Sang – Moon Bae (South Korea) is the defending Champion and
will be keen to defending his title. Danny Lee (NZL) and Tim Wilkinson (NZL)
are also likely to get starts. It starts on Thursday 15th May. I will report
back who won the trophy next week.
