Golf Events from the Weekend 14th June 2015

Well it was another exciting weekend on the Major Professional Golf Tours from around the world and this week the USPGA Tour and FedEx Cup headed to the State of Tennessee for the FedEx St. Jude Classic and it was played on the TPC Southwind, Memphis, Tennessee. It carried a huge prize purse of US $6,000,000 for the taking. Ben Crane (USA) was the defending Champion and was keen for back to back titles. It also attracted some of the leading players from the European Tour who wanted to play a tournament in the America to warm up for the second Major Championship of the year which is the 115th U.S. Open Championship which is on next week. Danny Lee (NZL) was having the week off but Tim Wilkinson (NZL) and Steven Alker (NZL) both gained starts. And it was the golfer by the name of Fabian Gomez (Argentina) who scored rounds of 66-4, 68-2, 67-3 and a final round of 66-4 for a 72 hole total of 267-13 and he won by four shots for his maiden win on the USPGA Tour of his career to date so far. He earned US $1,080,000 for the win and moved to thirty ninth position on the current 2014/15 USPGA Tour Money list standings with US $1,511,664 earned from the seventeen events he has played to date this season so far. Jordan Spieth (USA) still leads that list with US $6,063,838 earned from the sixteen events he has played to date this season so far. Fabian Gomez (Argentina) also earned 500 FedEx Cup Points for the win and moved to thirty sixth position on the current 2014/15 FedEx Cup Points list standings with 793 points earned from the seventeen events he has played to date this season so far and he is 1,735 points behind the current leader of that list who is Jordan Spieth (USA) who has earned 2,528 points from the sixteen events he has played to date this season so far. From the seventeen events Fabian Gomez (Argentina) has played to date this season so far he has made twelve cuts and achieved two top ten finishes which includes the win this week!! He will be happy with his four rounds this week that were all in the 60s especially his first and final rounds which were both 66-4s!!

Fabian Gomez (Argentina) in action during the final round
Fabian Gomez (Argentina) played an excellent round under the circumstances of carrying a share of the 54 hole lead into it. He scored 66-4 which included a front nine of 34-1 which included birdies on the par five, third hole and par three, eight hole and his lone bogey came on the par four, fifth hole and he made the turn at minus ten and was tied for the lead. Greg Owen (England) went out in 34-1 and made the turn at minus ten and was tied for the lead. Fabian Gomez (Argentina) played holes ten to fourteen one under par and that included birding the par three, eleventh hole and he moved to minus eleven and was now leading by three shots. Greg Owen (England) played holes ten to fourteen in two over par and that included making poor bogeys on the par four, twelfth hole and par three, fourteenth hole and he fell back to minus eight and was now three shots behind the leader.

Fabian Gomez (Argentina) played holes fifteen to seventeen in one under par and that included birding the par five, sixteenth hole and he moved to minus twelve and was still leading by three shots heading to the par four, seventy second hole. Greg Owen (England) played holes fifteen to seventeen in one under par and that included birding the par four, fifteenth hole and he moved to minus nine and was still three shots behind the leader  heading to the par four, seventy second hole.

Fabian Gomez (Argentina) pumps his fist in the Air after holing the winning putt!!
So to the par four, seventy second hole and Greg Owen (England) who was playing in the final group with Fabian Gomez (Argentina) made a solid par and finished the seventy two holes at minus nine and was four shots behind the winner. Fabian Gomez (Argentina) now stood on the par four, seventy second tee with a three shot lead and knew it he could just hit one more solid drive the tournament was virtually his. With water all down the left hand side and bunkers on the right he struck an excellent tee shot that landed right in the centre of the fairway. Then he played a very good second shot with his short iron that landed on the green pin high thirty feet to the right of the pin and he could saviour the moment with his caddie, Coco as they both walked up to the green getting huge applause from the surrounding gallery!! He calmed his nerve and put a very good stroke on the thirty foot birdie putt which held its line at perfect speed and fell in the centre of the cup for his birdie three!! He scored 32-3 on his back nine and finished the seventy two holes at minus thirteen to win by four shots!!

Fabian Gomez (Argentina) acknowledges the gallery after holing the winning putt!!
He got a huge high five and huge hug from his caddie, Coco and then gave a signed golf glove, golf ball and his caddie bib to one of the FedEx St. Jude Children’s Hospital kids who was waiting for him as he left the seventy second green. (St. Jude Children’s Hospital gets a lot of the funds that are raised from this event to put into getting sick kids well again). Fabian Gomez (Argentina) was then interviewed by CBS Sports on course reporter, David Feherty and he told him while holding the Argentine Flag in his hands with great passion "Even if I won many tournaments, winning here on the USPGA Tour is something amazing, and I'm going to enjoy the moment with my family," and after David Feherty mentioned he is now part of the list of argentine golfers to win on the USPGA Tour  Fabian Gomez (Argentina) replied "That list for me is an honour, and we share many, many weeks with Andres (Andres Romero (Argentina)), Angel (Angel Cabrera (Argentina))," "When they play on the tour the same week with me, we share some barbecue. We had one last night, and I know that they are going to be happy for this situation right now." It was his first USPGA title in his seventieth start in a season already featuring three top twenty-five finishes. He now gets to play in the PGA Championship, 2016 Master Tournament and many of the other big events and is exempt on the USPGA Tour till the end of the 2016/17 season. And this win will give him a lot of confidence moving forward with his golfing career.

Fabián Gómez (Argentina) (born 27 October 1978) is an Argentine professional golfer who has played on the PGA Tour, Nationwide Tour, PGA Tour Latinoamérica and the Tour de las Americas. Fabian Gómez (Argentina) was born in Chaco, Argentina. He has had three wins on the Tour de las Americas, in addition to three other wins on the Argentine TPG Tour. He placed second at the Chaco Open in 2006, the TLA Players Championship in 2006 and the Venezuela Open in 2007. He won TPG Tour Ranking in 2009. Fabian Gómez (Agrentina) won his first Nationwide Tour event at the 2010 Chitimacha Louisiana Open. He finished the year twelfth on the money list and earned his 2011 USPGA Tour card. That season, his best result was seventh at the Puerto Rico Open, fifteenth at the St. Jude Classic and eighteenth at the Viking Classic. In 2012 he returned to the Nationwide Tour. He finished second at the Chitimacha Louisiana Open, seventh at the South Georgia Classic and tenth at the Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open. He finished 55th on the Nationwide Tour money list. Later he finished tenth at the USPGA Tour Qualifying Tournament to regain his USPGA Tour card for the 2013 season.

In 2013, Fabian Gómez (Argentina) finished second at the Puerto Rico Open, sixteenth at the RBC Canadian Open and twenty first at the AT&T National. He finished 133rd on the FedEx Cup standings, so he lost his USPGA Tour card. On the 2014 Web.com Tour, Fabian Gómez (Argentina) finished second at the Stonebrae Classic, fourth at the United Leasing Championship and tenth at the Albertsons Boise Open. He finished twenty third in the regular season earnings, which earned him a USPGA Tour card for the 2015 season. In 2015, Fabian Gomez (Argentina) won the FedEx St. Jude Classic by four shots over Englishman, Greg Owen (England). This was his first victory on the USPGA Tour. In 2015, June 14th, he got his first USPGA Tour win in FedEx St. Jude Classic. Scoring 66-4 in the final round and a total of 13 under (as I mentioned above). Let’s hope he can continue this fine form in the weeks ahead and achieve more great results. I wish him all the best for the remaining events in the 2015 part of the 2014/15 USPGA Tour season.

Fabian Gomez (Argentina) poses with the St. Jude FedEx Classic Trophy he won!!
Coming in solo second position at 271-9 after 72 holes was Greg Owen (England); he earned US $648,000 for his efforts and moved to ninety first position on the current 2014/15 USPGA Tour Money list standings with US $775,220 earned from the thirteenth events he has played to date this season so far. He also earned 300 FedEx Cup points for his efforts and moved to ninety fifth position on the current 2014/15 FedEx Cup Points list standings with 426 points earned from the thirteen events he has played to date this season so far. From the thirteen events he has played to date this season so far he has made six cuts and achieved one top ten finish that came this week. He will be happy with his first and third rounds this week that were both in the 60s especially his first round 64-6 which was blemish free and also had him tied for the first round lead but he will be just content with his second and final rounds that were both 70 even par and had they been in the 60s he could of well been the champion. His temper got the better of him on the par four, twelfth hole when after hitting his drive in the hazard to the right he whacked his three wood so hard into the ground that the head broke off!! But it proves to me how passionate he is and wants to win on the USPGA Tour and at age 43 his chances are getting more difficult. But he will gain a lot of confidence out of this week going forward. Gregory Clive Owen (England) (born 19 February 1972) is an English professional golfer. Greg Owen (England) was born in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. He turned professional in 1992 and gained his European Tour card at the 1997 qualifying school. He finished in the top 100 of the Order of Merit every year from 1998 to 2004, and won for the first time on tour at the 2003 Daily Telegraph Damovo British Masters at his 158th tournament. At the 2001 Open Championship, Greg Owen (England) notably became only the sixth golfer in the history of the competition to score a rare albatross (double eagle), on the par-5 11th hole at Royal Lytham. Since 2005, Greg Owen (England) has played mainly in the United States being a full member of the USPGA Tour in 2005–07, 2009–10 and 2012. His best finish in the United States was second at the 2006 Bay Hill Invitational, where he finished one shot behind Rod Pampling (Australia) after playing the last two holes in three over par and second at the 2015 FedEx St. Jude Classic this past week as I mentioned above. Having lost his USPGA Tour card at the end of 2007, he bounced back the following season, to graduate directly from the second tier Nationwide Tour (Now Web.com) by finishing in tenth place on the money list. In 2010 he finished 183rd on the USPGA Tour money list to lose his card for the second time. In 2011 he played again on the Nationwide Tour, finishing 52nd on the money list. However he finished tied for 18th in the 2011 USPGA Q School to regain his full USPGA Tour card for 2012. Greg Owen (England) has featured in the top fifty of the Official World Golf Rankings although his ranking at the start of 2012 was 620. Let’s hope he can have more top ten finishes in the weeks to come and I wish all the best for the remaining 2015 part of the 2014/15 USPGA Tour season.

Rounding out the top seven this week in tied for third position at 272-8 after 72 holes was Matt Jones (Australia); he earned US $270,600 for his efforts and moved to forty fourth position on the current 2014/15 USPGA Tour Money list standings with US $1,460,111 earned from the eighteen events he has played to date this season so far. He also earned 125 FedEx Cup points for his efforts and moved to forty third position on the current 2014/15 FedEx Cup Points list standings with 735 points earned from the eighteen events he has played to date this season so far. From the eighteen events he has played to date this season so far he has made fifteen cuts and achieved three top ten finishes which includes the one this week. He will be happy with his four rounds this week that were all in the 60s especially his third round 67-3!! He is again having another very consistent season and must be due to win his second USPGA Tour event very soon. Matt Jones (Australia) in his 156th USPGA Tour start, got his first USPGA Tour win at the 2014 Shell Houston Open, beating Matt Kuchar (USA) on the first playoff hole when he made a 42-yard chip in for a birdie. He had previously made a 46-foot putt on the eighteeth hole to take the match to a playoff. The win also made Matt Jones (Australia) the last guaranteed entrant to the Masters Tournament and moved him to 41st in the Official World Golf Ranking. In May he finished 17th at The Players Championship. In the 2015 USPGA season, Matt Jones (USA) finished eleventh at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in January, solo third at Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard, tied for seventh at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro – Am and the tied for third this past week. Let’s hope he can have more top ten finishes in the weeks to come and perhaps win his second event on the USPGA Tour in 2015? I wish him all the best for the rest of the 2015 part of the 2014/15 USPGA Tour season.

Also tied for third position was Brooks Koepka (USA); he too earned US $270,600 for his efforts and moved to twenty third position on the current 2014/15 USPGA Tour Money list standings with US $2,221,813 earned from the thirteen events he has played to date this season so far. He also earned 125 FedEx Cup Points for his efforts and moved to eighteenth position on the current 2014/15 FedEx Cup Points list standings with 1,066 points earned from the thirteen events he has played to date this season so far. From the thirteen events he has played to date this season so far he has made eleven cuts and achieved four top ten finishes which includes the one this week and also his maiden win at the Waste Management Phoenix Open in early February. He will be happy with his first and second rounds that were both in the 60s especially his first round 64-6 which saw him tied for the lead!! But he will be just content with his third and final rounds that were both in the low 70s. But he must be a dark horse for the second Major Championship of the year next week which is the 115th U.S. Open Championship? Brooks Koepka (USA) (born May 3, 1990) is an American professional golfer. Brooks Koepka (USA) was born in Wellington, Florida. He played college golf at Florida State University where he won three events and was a three-time All - American. He qualified for the 2012 U.S. Open while still an amateur. After missing the cut in the U.S. Open, Brooks Koepka (USA) turned professional and began playing on the Challenge Tour in Europe. He won his first event in September at the Challenge de Catalunya. In 2013 he had his second victory on the Challenge Tour, winning the 2013 Montecchia Golf Open for his second win. He followed this a month later with his third win, the Fred Olsen Challenge de Espana, where he set the tournament record, 260 (−24), and won by a record 10 strokes.  Three weeks later he had his third win of the year at the Scottish Hydro Challenge. With those three wins, he earned his European Tour card for the remainder of the 2013 season and for the full 2014 season. The day after his third Challenge Tour win of 2013, Brooks Koepka (USA) qualified for the 2013 Open Championship. Brooks Koepka (USA) made his debut as a member of the European Tour (he played in three events prior to promotion to membership) at the Scottish Open, finishing tied for twelfth.

In his first event of the 2013/14 USPGA Tour, Brooks Koepka (USA) led after the second and third rounds of the Frys.com Open. He finished tied for third. At the U.S. Open, he collected a fourth-place finish, which earned him his USPGA Tour card for the 2014–15 season and his first Masters Tournament invitation. Later he ended 15th at the PGA Championship. He was nominated for the USPGA Tour Rookie of the Year award. On the 2014 European Tour, Brooks Koepka (USA) won the Turkish Airlines Open and finished third at the Dubai Desert Classic and Omega European Masters, and ninth at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. He ranked eighth in the 2014 Race to Dubai rankings and was named the European Tour's Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year. Brooks Koepka (USA) looks to have a very bright future on the USPGA Tour for many years to come and I would look for him to win again before the season is over and perhaps it will be a WGC – Event or even a Major Championship? I wish him all the best for the remaining events in the 2015 part of the 2014/15 USPGA Tour season.

Also tied for third position was Phil Mickelson (USA); he too earned US $270,600 for his efforts and moved to twenty ninth position on the current 2014/15 USPGA Tour Money list standings with US $1,782,525 earned from the twelve events he has played to date this season so far. From the twelve events he has played to date this season so far he has made nine cuts and achieved three top ten finishes which includes the one this week. He will be happy with his first, second and final rounds that were all in the 60s especially his final round 65-5 which was the equal low round of the day. But he will be just content with his third round 70 even par. He has displayed he is in good form heading into the second Major Championship of 2015 which is the 115th U.S. Open Championship and if he can win next week he will complete the career Grand Slam having already won the 2004, 2006, 2010 Masters Tournament; 2013 Open Championship and 2005 PGA Championship. Phil Mickelson (USA) has won forty two USPGA tour events with his last win coming at the 2013 Open Championship. He has also won five Major Championships to date so far in his career and here they are from the first to the most recent; 2004 Masters Tournament; 2005 PGA Championship, 2006 Masters Tournament; 2010 Masters Tournament and 2013 Open Championship. He also has achieved thirty seven top ten finishes in Major Championships as well including six runner up finishes in U.S. Open Championships. The U.S. Open Championship is the only Major Championship he needs to win to win the career Grand Slam and he will have his best ever chance in June (Next Week) at Chambers Bay in the Pacific Northwest because he is nearing forty five years old he won’t get many more chances (He turns 45 on Tuesday 16th June). He has also won two WGC Events that were the 2009 Cadillac Championship and 2009 HSBC Champions and also achieved thirteen more top ten finishes. Let’s hope he can win his forty third USPGA Tour event in the 2015 part of the 2014/15 USPGA Tour season. I wish him all the best for the 2015 part of the 2014/15 USPGA Tour season.

Also tied for third position was Seung – Yul Noh (South Korea); he too earned US $270,600 for his efforts and moved to 114th position on the current 2014/15 USPGA Tour Money list standings with US $582,721 earned from the sixteen events he has played to date this season so far. He will be happy with his first, third and final rounds that were all in the 60s especially his final round 65-5 which was blemish free and the equal low round of the day!! But he will be disappointed with his second round 72+2. But he will be happy with this finish having missed his last four consecutive cuts!! This marked the first time that Seung-yul Noh (South Korea) had earned a full membership on the USPGA Tour. In 2012, he finished 49th on the USPGA Tour money list and 37th in the FedEx Cup playoffs to retain his card for 2013. In 2013, he finished 153rd on the money list and missed the FedEx Cup playoffs. He will be happy with his first, second and final rounds that were all in the 60s especially his first round 65-5 which saw him only one shot of the lead but he will be bitterly disappointed with his third round 74+4 that ruined his chances of  winning or having his first top ten finish of the season!! But he will gain some confidence out of this finish which is the best of his season to date so far. Let’s hope he can make some cuts in the next few events he plays in, in the 2015 part of the 2014/15 USPGA Tour season and even achieve some top ten finishes.

The next best New Zealand golfer in the field was Tim Wilkinson (NZL) and he scored an average first round of 70 even par with scoring a front nine of 34-1 with his lone birdie coming on the par three, eighth hole and then he scored a poor back nine of 36+1 with his lone bogey coming on the par four, seventeenth hole. Then he scored a good second round of 70 even par which included a front nine of 34-1 with his lone birdie coming on the par five, third hole and then he scored a poor back nine of 36+1 with his lone birdie coming on the par five, sixteenth hole and he bogeyed the par four, thirteenth hole and par four, eighteenth hole. Then he scored a brilliant third round of 65-5 which was the low round of the day and included an excellent front nine of 31-4 with birdies on the par four, first hole, par four, second hole, par four, sixth hole and par four, seventh hole and he scored a back nine of 34-1 with birdies on the par three, eleventh hole and par five, sixteenth hole but had a poor bogey on the par four, tenth hole and he scored a shocking final round of 75+5 which included a poor front nine of 38+3 with a poor bogey on the par four, first hole and a shocking double bogey on the par four, ninth hole then he scored a poor back nine of 37+2 which included birdies on the par four, fifteenth hole and par five, sixteenth hole but he had poor bogeys on the par three, eleventh hole and par four, thirteenth hole and a shocking double bogey on the par four, twelfth hole for a 72 hole total of 280 even par and finished in tied for forty fifth position. He earned US $16,817 for his efforts and moved to 192nd  position on the current 2014/15 USPGA Tour Money list standings with US $114,111 earned from the twenty events he has played to date this season so far. He also earned twenty two FedEx Cup Points for his efforts and moved to 179th  position on the current 2014/15 FedEx Cup Points list standings with 120 points earned from the twenty events he has played to date this season so far. From the twenty events he has played to date this season so far he has made six cuts and achieved no top ten finishes. He will be happy with his first, second and third rounds this week that were all at par and under par especially his third round 65-5 which was the low round of the day!! But he will be bitterly disappointed with his final round 75+5 which ruined his chances of achieving his first top ten finish of the season. In the last fifteen events he has played on the USPGA Tour he has only made three cuts. Let’s hope he can make some more cuts in the remaining part of the  2015 part of the 2014/15 USPGA Tour season and have some top ten finishes as well.
