Golf Events from the Weekend 23rd August 2015

Well it was another excellent weekend on the Major Professional Golf Tours from around the world and this week the USPGA Tour and FedEx Cup headed to the State of North Carolina for the final event of the 2014/15 Regular FedEx Cup Season and it was the last chance for players to get inside the top 125 on the final 2014/15 FedEx Cup Regular season points standings list and book there place in the first event of the 2014/15 FedEx Cup Playoff series the following week at The Barclays. It was the Wyndham Championship and was played on the Sedgefield CC, Greensboro, North Carolina. It carried a good prize purse of US $5,400,000 for the taking. Camilo Villegas (Columbia) was the defending champion and was keen to defend his title. Steven Alker (NZL) and Tim Wilkinson (NZL) gained starts as well and it was Steven Alker (NZL) and Tim Wilkinson (NZL) last chance to make the FedEx Cup Playoffs. And it was the golfer by the name of Davis Love III (USA) who scored rounds of 64-6, 66-4, 69-1 and a final round of 64-6 for a 72 hole total of 263-17 and he won by a single shot for his twenty first USPGA Tour win of his career to date so far and his first since 2008 and he is fifty one years old which makes him the oldest winner on the 2014/15 USPGA Tour season. He won US $972,000 for his efforts and moved to seventy second position on the current 2014/15 USPGA Tour Money list standings with US $1,241,253 earned from the sixteen events he has played to date this season so far. He also earned 500 FedEx Cup Points for the win and moved to seventy sixth position on the final 2014/15 FedEx Cup Regular season points list standings 649 points earned from the sixteen events he played to date this season so far and has now qualified for the first FedEx Cup Playoff event at the Barclays next week and he trails the current leader of that list by 3,520 points and he is Jordan Spieth (USA) who has earned 4,169 points from the twenty one events he has played to date this season so far. From the sixteen events Davis Love III (USA) has played to date this season so far he has made seven cuts and achieved two top ten finishes which includes his win this past week. He will be happy with his four rounds this week that were all in the mid to low 60s especially his 64-6s in the first and final rounds and his 64-6 in the final round which included two eagles and playing a five hole stretch on the front nine from holes two to six where he went birdie, birdie, birdie, eagle and birdie!! And also his eagle on the par five, fifteenth hole that saw him take solo procession of the lead and he never relinquished it!! And I’m sure this win will be a huge pleasant surprise for him at age fifty one years old!! And to beat some of the players that will play on USA Ryder Cup team which he captains next year must be very satisfying.

Davis Love III (USA) tees off during the final round
Davis Love III (USA) played a brilliant final round of 64-6 which included a front nine of 31-4 with birdies on the par four, second hole, par three, third hole, par four, fourth hole, par four, sixth hole and an eagle on the par five, fifth hole!! But he had poor bogeys on the par four, first hole and par three, seventh hole and he made the turn at minus fifteen and was one shot behind the leader. Jason Gore (USA) went out in 34-1 and made the turn at minus sixteen and was leading by a single shot.

Davis Love III (USA) played holes ten to fourteen in even par which included making five straight pars in a row and he remained at minus fifteen and was now leading by a single shot. Jason Gore (USA) played holes ten to fourteen in two over par and that included poor bogeys on the par four, thirteenth hole and par four, fourteenth hole and he fell back to minus fourteen and now was one shot behind the leader.

Davis Love III (USA) played holes fifteen to seventeen in two under par and that included making an amazing eagle on the par five, fifteenth hole where he landed his second shot fifteen feet from the pin and holed the putt and moved to minus seventeen and was still leading a single shot. Jason Gore (USA) played holes fifteen to seventeen in two under par and that included making a brilliant eagle on the par five, fifteenth hole and moved he to minus sixteen and was still one shot behind the leader.

Davis Love III (USA) putts during the final round
Davis Love III (USA) who was playing about an hour ahead of the leaders made a solid par up the par four, seventy second hole and finished the seventy two holes at minus seventeen and would have to wait and see if it was enough to win outright or would he have to go to a playoff? Davis Love III (USA) scored 33-2 on the back nine. Jason Gore (USA) stood on the par four, seventy second tee one shot behind the leader and knew a birdie was must to force a playoff. He struck his drive right down the centre of the fairway and was left with a seven iron for his second shot to the green. He hit his seven iron slightly fat and it landed on the front of the green about forty feet from the cup. He walked up to the green knowing he would have to hole that putt to force the playoff with Davis Love III (USA). He calmed his nerve and struck a very good putt that tracked right on line but just veered to the left at the hole and he tapped in for his par four to finish at minus sixteen and finished one shot behind the winner.

It was now confirmed that Davis Love III (USA) had won his twenty first USPGA Tour event and he was super happy when he found out from the USPGA Tour official while practising on the driving range!! He hugged his caddie, Jeff Webber who said jokingly “Well done Grandpa” to celebrate and then he was interviewed by CBS Sports on course reporter, David Feherty and he asked him “Davis you were supposed to of walked off in to that particular sunset (Pointing to the sun that was setting in the distance) a few years ago and this has got to feel absolutely amazing”. Davis replied “Um well it is incredible, I just feel incredibly blessed and I have had a lot of people helping me, you know I am coming back from two big surgeries and everybody helping me with my golf game and hanging in there and Jeff Webber (His caddie) hanging in there with me and a lot of people have asked Jeff why haven’t you got yourself a young guy (to caddie for?) And I don’t know why he hasn’t? He hung in there with me too!! And a lot of great support just fun to hang in there and keep competing on the PGA Tour” Then David Feherty said to him “Well winning the PGA Championship (his only Major Championship in 1997) and twenty one PGA Tour wins that is a Hall of Fame Career, congratulations”. And Davis replied “Thanks, David”.

Tiger Woods (USA) said to Davis Love III (USA) at the start of the week “You are still a good enough player to win on the USPGA Tour”. And this week he went out and proved that he was!! Davis Milton Love III (born April 13, 1964) is an American professional golfer who has won twenty one events on the USPGA Tour, including one major championship: the 1997 PGA Championship. He also won the prestigious Players Championship in 1992 and 2003. He has featured in the top 10 of the Official World Golf Ranking for over 450 weeks and reached a high ranking of third. On November 9, 2008, Davis Love's III (USA) twentieth career USPGA Tour victory at the Children's Miracle Network Classic gave him a lifetime exemption on the tour, at the age of 44. His victory in the 2015 Wyndham Championship at age 51 made him the third oldest winner in USPGA Tour history, trailing only Sam Snead (USA) and Art Wall, Jr. (USA). This win also brought Davis Love III (USA) into select company in another USPGA Tour distinction: he became only the third player to win on the Tour in four different decades, joining Sam Snead (USA) and Raymond Floyd (USA). Davis Love III (USA) captained the losing 2012 U.S. Ryder Cup team. Davis Love III (USA) was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, to Davis M. Love, Jr. and his wife, Helen, a day after his father competed in the final round at the 1964 Masters Tournament. His father, who was a former pro and nationally recognized golf instructor, introduced him to the game. His mother is also an avid low-handicap golfer. His father was killed in a 1988 plane crash. He attended high school at Glynn Academy, Brunswick, Georgia and later the University of North Carolina (1983–85), where he was a three-time all-American and all-Atlantic Coast Conference golfer. He won six titles during his collegiate career, including the ACC tournament championship in 1984.

Davis Love III (USA) turned professional in 1985, earning his USPGA Tour card in the autumn of 1985, on his first attempt. He quickly established himself on the USPGA Tour, winning his first tour event in 1987 at the MCI Heritage Golf Classic, at Harbour Town Golf Links. He would later win this event four more times, setting a record for the most victories in the tournament. Davis Love III (USA) and Fred Couples (USA) won four straight times from 1992–95 for the United States in the World Cup of Golf, a record for this event. Davis Love III (USA) was a consistent contender and winner on the USPGA Tour in the 1990s and early 2000s, but the most memorable win came at the 1997 PGA Championship, his only major championship victory. The 1997 PGA Championship was played at Winged Foot Golf Club, and just four players in the field finished under-par for the week. Davis Love's III (USA) winning score was 11-under-par, five strokes better than Justin Leonard (USA). When Davis Love III (USA) sank his birdie putt on the final hole of the championship, it was under the arc of a rainbow, which appeared as he walked up to the eighteenth green. In the telecast, CBS Sports announcer Jim Nantz made the connection between the rainbow and Davis Love's III (USA) late father, Davis Love, Jr., who was a well-known and beloved figure in the golf world. This victory was the last major championship win achieved with a wooden-headed driver.

In 1994, Davis Love III (USA) founded Love Golf Design, a golf course architecture company, with his younger brother and caddie, Mark Love. The company has been responsible for the design of several courses throughout the southeast United States. Completed in 1997, Ocean Creek is his first signature course and is located on Fripp Island, South Carolina. Davis Love III (USA) also designed the Dunes course at Diamante in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, which is ranked among Golf Magazine's Top 100 courses in the world. In 1997, Davis Love III (USA) published the book Every Shot I Take, which honours his father's lessons on life and golf. The book received the 1997 United States Golf Association's International Book Award. That year, he developed and designed his own golf course in Harnett County, North Carolina. The course, Anderson Creek Club, won an award for "Best New Course in North Carolina" in 2001. He and his wife Robin have two children. After failing to qualify for the 2014 FedEx Cup Playoff Series, Davis Love III (USA) made his Champions Tour debut at the Pacific Links Hawaii Championship. Davis Love III (USA) was named the captain of the U.S. 2016 Ryder Cup team in February 2015. Has a portion of I-95 named after him. In 1998, the segment of I-95 which extends in Georgia from the McIntosh County line to Highway 341 at exit 7A and B was designated the "Davis Love III Highway." Davis Love III (USA) hit the second longest drive ever officially recorded in competition play at the 2004 Mercedes Championships. His 476-yard drive was still 39 yards short of Mike Austin's (USA) record. He also has a restaurant named after him in his hometown of Sea Island, Georgia, called the Davis Love Grill. He had two wins in his amateur career which were 1984 North and South Amateur and the Middle Atlantic Amateur.

Davis Love III (USA) poses with the Sam Snead Cup he won for winning the Wyndham Championship!!
He has won twenty one events in his USPGA Tour career to date so far and here they are from the first to the most recent: 1987 MCI Heritage Golf Classic; 1990 The International; 1991 MCI Heritage Classic; 1992 The Players Championship; 1992 MCI Heritage Golf Classic; 1992 KMart Greater Greensboro Open; 1993 Infiniti Tournament of Champions; 1993 Las Vegas Invitational; 1995 Freeport-McMoRan Classic; 1996 Buick Invitational; 1997 PGA Championship (Maiden Major Championship); 1997 Buick Challenge; 1998 MCI Classic; 2001 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am; 2003 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am; 2003 The Players Championship; 2003 MCI Heritage; 2003 The International; 2006 Chrysler Classic of Greensboro; 2008 Children’s Miracle Network Classic and the 2015 Wyndham Championship. He has also achieved twenty one top ten finishes in Major Championships that includes his Maiden Major Championship win at 1997 PGA Championship. He has also achieved eleven top ten finishes in WGC Events with his best finishes being Runner – Up at the 2004 and 2006 Accenture Match Play Championship. He has also represented USA in World Cup of Golf in 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1997 and from years 1992-1995 he won four consecutive titles with his team mate Fred Couples (USA). He has also represented Team USA in the Ryder Cup in years 1993 (Winners), 1995, 1997, 1999 (Winners), 2002 and 2004. He has also represented Team USA in the Presidents Cup in years 1994 (Winners), 1996 (Winners), 1998, 2000 (Winners), 2003 (Tie) and 2005 (Winners). And as I mentioned before he is the 2016 Ryder Cup Captain for Team USA. His career has been great but it could be said that he should have won more Major Championships with near misses in the 1995 and 1999 Masters Tournament and three putting the seventy second hole for bogey at the 1996 US Open Championship handing the tournament to Steve Jones (USA). But in my opinion he will leave a legacy of one of the best Golfers of his era and a very nice person as well!! Let’s hope he can have a great FedEx Cup Playoff Series in the weeks ahead. I wish him every continuing success for the 2015 part of the 2014/15 USPGA Tour season and FedEx Cup Playoff Series.

Coming in solo second position at 274-16 after 72 holes was Jason Gore (USA); he earned US $583,000 for his efforts and moved to eighty eighth position on the current 2014/15 USPGA Tour Money list standings with US $1,054,313 earned from the twenty four events he has played to date this season so far. He also earned 300 FedEx Cup Points for his efforts and finished in ninety eighth position on the final 2014/15 regular season FedEx Cup Points list standings with 564 points earned from the twenty four events he has played to date this season so far. From the twenty four events Jason Gore (USA) has played to date this season so far he has made eleven cuts and achieved two top ten finishes which includes the one this past week. He will be happy with his four rounds this week that were all in the 60s especially his 62-8 in the third round which was the equal low round of the day.  But he will be disappointed with his final round back nine that was only 35 even par. But he will be pleased he has made it into the first FedEx Cup Playoff Event next week at the Barclays and another good finish could see him reach the Deutsche Bank Championship the following week that is the second playoff event. Jason William Gore (USA) (born May 17, 1974) is an American professional golfer. Jason Gore (USA) was born in Van Nuys, California. He first attended the University of Arizona before transferring to Pepperdine University. While at Pepperdine, he was part of their NCAA Division I Championship team in 1997. He also played on the victorious Walker Cup team that year. Jason Gore (USA) turned professional in 1997. He played on the USPGA Tour after moving from the Nationwide Tour midseason in 2005 after receiving a battlefield promotion, which is given when a player wins three Nationwide Tour events in one season. He has one USPGA Tour win, the 84 Lumber Classic in 2005, and is the all-time leader in career wins on what is now the Web.com Tour, with seven. Jason Gore (USA) played in the final group of the 2005 U.S. Open with Retief Goosen (RSA). He shot a 14-over-par 84 to drop all the way to a tie for 48th, and Michael Campbell (NZL) went on to win the trophy. Jason Gore (USA) was not fully exempt on the USPGA Tour from 2009 to 2014. Jason Gore (USA) currently resides in Valencia, California with his wife, Megan, his son, Jaxon, and his daughter, Olivia. And he only came back to the USPGA Tour after he failed in his application to be the coach of the Pepperdine University golf team. But I feel it was a wise choice to go back and give the USPGA Tour another go because that is where he belongs and he proved it this week. Let’s hope he can continue this form for the FedEx Cup Playoff Series in the next few weeks. I wish him every continuing success for the rest of the 2015 part 2014/15 USPGA tour and FedEx Cup Playoff Series.

Rounding out the top five in tied for third position at 265-15 after 72 holes was Scott Brown (USA); he earned US $280,800 for his efforts and moved to seventy ninth position on the current 2014/15 USPGA Tour Money list standings with US $1,145,250 earned from the twenty eight events he has played to date this season so far. He will be happy with his four rounds this week that were all in the 60s especially his second round 65-5 and his front nine in the final round which was 32-3 and included a hole in one on the par three, third hole!! But he will be slightly disappointed with his final round back nine of 36+1 which cost him his chance of winning his second USPGA Tour event!! But this finish will give him a huge boost of confidence heading into the first FedEx Cup Playoff event at the Barclays next week. Scott Brown (USA) (born May 22, 1983) is an American professional golfer who plays on the USPGA Tour. Scott Brown (USA) attended the University of South Carolina Aiken, playing at Division II level collegiate golf. He turned professional in 2006, and begun playing mini-tours. In 2010 and 2011 he played on the Nationwide Tour, recording five top-three finishes in 2011 to finish eighth on the money list and earn a USPGA Tour card for 2012. Scott Brown (USA) missed his first six USPGA Tour cuts before he finished tied for fifth at the 2012 Puerto Rico Open. Scott Brown had two fifth place finishes in 2012, but could only manage to place 148th on the USPGA Tour money list, barely maintaining conditional status by US $4,468. He started the 2013 season dividing his time between the USPGA Tour and Web.com Tour. Scott Brown (USA) regained his USPGA Tour card through 2015 with a win at the 2013 Puerto Rico Open. He also earned 145 FedEx Cup points for his efforts and finished in nineteenth position on the final regular season 2014/15 FedEx Cup points list standings with 1,389 points earned from the twenty events he has played to date this season so far. From the twenty events he has played to date this season so far he has made sixteen cuts and achieved seven top ten finishes which includes the one this week and his two playoff losses at the Northern Trust Open in February and the Travelers Championship in June. He will be happy with his four rounds this week that were all in the mid 60s especially his first, second and third rounds that were all 66-4s!! But he will be disappointed with his final round back nine 35 even par that prevented him from winning!! But he is in great form heading into the FedEx Cup Playoff Series and must be a dark horse to win the FedEx Cup!! From the twenty eight events he has played in this season he made eight cuts and achieved no top ten finishes. He will be pleased with his first round 68-2 but angry with his second round 73+3 especially his front nine 41+6!! In the last twenty three events he played on the USPGA Tour this season he only made five cuts. His 2014/15 USPGA Tour season and FedEx Cup Season is now over. He now heads to the 2015 Web.com Tour Playoffs to try and regain his exempt status for the 2015/16 USPGA Tour season. Let’s hope he can make it back to the USPGA Tour for the 2015/16 season by finishing inside the top twenty five money earners on the final 2015 Web.com Tour Playoffs Points list standings. His 2014/15 USPGA Tour and FedEx Cup seasons are now over. He now heads to the 2015 Web.com Tour Playoffs to try and regain his exempt status for the 2015/16 USPGA Tour season. Then he scored a good third round of 68-2 which included a very good front nine of 33-2 with birdies on the par four, first hole and par five, fifth hole then he played an average back nine of 35 even par which included a birdie on the par three, sixteenth hole and a lone bogey on the par four, eighteenth hole and an average final round of 70 even par which included an average front nine of 35 even par with a lone bogey on the par three, seventh hole and a lone birdie on the par four, ninth hole and then an average back nine of 35 even par which included birdies on the par four, thirteenth hole, par four, fourteenth hole, par five, fifteenth hole and par four, eighteenth hole but he had a poor bogey on the par four, twelfth hole and a shocking triple bogey seven on the par four, eleventh hole where he shanked his third shot for his chip!! for a 72 hole total of 267-13 and he tied for tenth position which was his first and only top ten finish of the 2014/15 USPGA Tour season. He earned US $129,600 for his efforts and moved to 162nd position on the current 2014/15 USPGA Tour Money list standings with earned US $448,598 earned from the eleven events he has played in to date this season. He earned sixty eighth FedEx Cup points for his efforts and finished in 178th position on the final 2014/15 FedEx Cup Points regular season standings list with 215 points earned from the eleven events he has played to date this season so far and did not make the FedEx Cup Playoffs. From the eleven events he has played to date this season so far he has made six cuts, withdrawn from one event and achieved one top ten finish that came this week. He will be happy with his first, second and third rounds that were all in the 60s especially his first round 64-6 and his second round 65-5!! But mad with his final round 70 even par especially his triple bogey on the par four, eleventh hole!! But at the same time he will be extremely happy with how he came back from that disastrous triple bogey seven on the par four, eleventh hole with four birdies in his last six holes to achieve his first and only top ten finish of the season!! At least he will be happy that his back held up to complete 72 holes and the last nine events he has played on the USPGA Tour his back has felt great!! And I feel more made cuts and top ten finishes are not too far way for him if he can find away to hit his drives in the fairway and just play more consistent golf on the whole!! But his 2014/15 USPGA Tour and FedEx Cup Season is now over!! His next start will likely be at the Frys.com Open to start the 2015/16 USPGA Tour and FedEx Cup season. I wish him all the best for a brilliant start to the 2015/16 USPGA Tour season.

The most fortunate player this week was Jeff Overton and he finished 125th on the final regular season FedEx Cup Points list standings with 458 points earned from the twenty nine events he played in to date so far this season and he will advance to The Barclays next week which is the first event in the FedEx Cup Playoff Series and he was 0.5 points ahead of Will MacKenzie (USA) who was the least fortunate player this week who finished in 126th position on the final regular season FedEx Cup Points list standings with 457.5 points earned from the sixteen events he played in this season and his 2014/15 FedEx Cup season is now over and he will be heading back to the 2015 Web.com Tour Finals to attempt to regain his card for 2015/16 USPGA Tour season.
