Well it was another awesome weekend on the Major
Professional Golf Tours from around the world and this week the USPGA Tour and
FedEx Cup headed to the State of California for the start of the 2015/16 USPGA Tour
season and it was the Frys.com Open and it was played on the Silverado CC
(North), Napa, California. It carried a huge prize – purse of US
$6,000,000 for the taking. Sang moon –Bae (South Korea) was the defending
champion but didn’t defend his title as he has just commenced his two years of
military service for the South Korean Army so there was a new Champion. And it
was the golfer by the name of Emiliano Grillo (Argentina) who scored rounds of 68-4,
71-1, 65-7 and a final round of 69-3 for a seventy two hole total of 273-15 but
he was tied on that score by Kevin Na (USA) who scored rounds of 68-4, 71-1,
64-8 and a final round of 70-2 for a seventy two hole total of 273-15 also. So
those two players headed back to the par five, seventy second tee for the first
playoff hole.
The USPGA Tour Official was there and the Frys.com CEO
had two numbers in a hat for the players to choose from to determine the
playing order. Emilano Grillo (Argentina) choose number one and he teed off
first. He hit a very good drive that flew slightly from left to right and
landed in the fairway to the right hand side. Kevin Na (USA) choose number two
from the hat and teed off second. He hit a good drive that drew up the right
side of the fairway but didn’t quite draw enough and landed in the right hand
fairway bunker which meant he would have to lay up for his second shot. Emiliano
Grillo (Argentina) went for the green with his fairway wood for his second shot
and he leaked it out to the right into the rough but had a good angle for his
third shot chip. Kevin Na (USA) laid up from the fairway bunker for his second
shot but it landed in the first cut of rough which wasn’t ideal. Kevin Na (USA)
played his third shot first and hit a good full wedge shot that landed just
past the pin with no spin and rolled to come to rest forty feet past the pin
and he had left the door open for Emiliano Grillo (Argentina). Emiliano Grillo
(Argentina) played his third shot next which was a forty yard chip shot from
the rough. He played a very good chip shot that landed just short of the green
and rolled up past the pin and left himself five feet for birdie and the win.
Kevin Na (USA) was now faced with a forty foot birdie putt that he thought he
had too hole to extend the playoff to the second hole. He struck a very good
putt and it came up three feet short. Emiliano Grillo (Argentina) now had a
five foot birdie putt to win his maiden USPGA Tour event. He calmed his nerve
and struck a good putt but it caught the left lip and spun out leaving three
feet for his par which he tapped in. Kevin Na (USA) tapped in his three footer
for par and those two players headed back to the seventy second tee again for
the second playoff hole.
So to the second playoff hole and Emiliano Grillo
(Argentina) teed off first and faded it too much from left to right and it
landed in the right hand fairway bunker. Kevin Na (USA) teed off second and hit
a brilliant drive right down the centre of the fairway and he had a great
chance of reaching the green in two shots. Emiliano Grillo (Argentina) laid up
from the fairway bunker for his second shot to leave himself a short iron to
the green for his third. Kevin Na (USA) played his second shot next and he
choose his driver to try and hit the green in two. But he put a terrible swing
on it and snap hooked it way left leaving an extremely difficult shot with his
short wedge for his third. Emiliano Grillo (Argentina) now knew he had a great
chance to apply some real pressure to Kevin Na (USA) if he could just get his
third shot on the green. He choose an aggressive line with his short iron and
it landed in the fringe just short of the green and came to rest ten feet to
the right of the pin. Kevin Na’s (USA) third shot was now made that much
tougher knowing again he would need a birdie to extend the playoff to a third
hole. Kevin Na (USA) was faced with wedge shot that he decided to hit through a
small gap in the tree in front of him. He hit the shot just how he wanted
through the gap in the tree but the ball had no spin on it and it landed pin
high and rolled into the rough at the back of the green. Kevin Na (USA) played
an aggressive chip for his third shot that rolled right to the front of the
green. Kevin Na (USA) was still away for his fourth shot and he was faced with
a fifteen foot putt for his par that he had to hole to have any chance of
extending the playoff to a third hole. He struck a very good putt but it just
never took the left to right break like he expected and missed on the left hand
side of the cup. He tapped his bogey putt in and now Emilio Grillo (Argentina)
knew he had two putts from ten feet to win his maiden USPGA Tour event in his
first start on the USPGA Tour as a full member. He calmed his nerve and then
struck a perfect putt that broke slightly from left to right and fell in the
cup for his birdie!! And he pumped his fist in the air to celebrate his win!!
Then he got a huge hug from his caddie!! And his fellow Argentine professionals
came onto the green to give him the traditional wine shower including Fabian
Gomez (Argentina), Miguel Angel Carballo (Argentina) and Angel Cabrera
(Argentina)!!
Emiliano Grillo (Argentina) holds his ball up to acknowledge the gallery after holing the winning putt!! |
Then Emiliano Grillo (Argentina) was then
interviewed by golf channel on course reporter, Matt Gogel (USA) and he said to
him “Thanks, thank you Roger (meaning Roger Maltbie who is the golf channels
other on course reporter) with Emiliano (Grillo) (Argentina), let’s just start
first with that miss on the first playoff hole, what was going through you mind
and what did you, how did you collect yourself going back to the tee?” And
Emiliano Grillo (Argentina) replied “Well um, yeah I missed a short putt in
there, it was kind of like the one in Puerto Rico (where he lost a playoff in
March 2015), but the difference was I hit this one good, I don’t know what
happened but, I got to the tee (meaning back at the par five, eighteenth tee)
his caddie asked him “Are you okay?” and I replied yeah, I like yeah sure I am
good as a charm, you how to say, you
know I stayed positive and hit a great shot in there, and lucky Kevin (Na) had
a six made a six, so you know he was putting for six, so I had a two putt in
there, I can I, I was just really focused on my putt, and I didn’t even look at
his, and are you know I hit a perfect putt and it went in!!” Then golf channel
on course reporter, Matt Gogel (USA) said to him “Two weeks ago you won the
Web.com Tour Championship to gain your USPGA Tour Membership, this is your
first event as a USPGA Tour Member, describe the emotions that are going
through you right now, knowing the Masters the exemptions and all the good
stuff that comes with it”. Then
Emiliano Grillo (Argentina) replied “Well you are saying Masters and I can’t
believe it!! (Smiling) I mean this is awesome!! You know when I got the card
(2015/16 USPGA Tour card) after the Web.com Tour Championship, You know I saw I
was seventy one or seventy two in the ranks (On the Official World Golf
Rankings) so I told my team look I have a chance of getting top fifty by the
end of the year let’s take care of it and try to get it done, maybe you know we
can play the tournaments that we always wanted, I am really nervous right now,
you I just want to thank my wife and my team and my sponsors, um you know
without them this is not possible, I hit the shots but there is a lot of people
behind me you know my wife, my caddie, my manager there always behind me and
supporting me”. Then golf channel on course reporter, Matt Gogel (USA) said to
him “Emiliano, congratulations, first USPGA Tour win and thank you for your
time”.
Emiliano Grillo (Argentina) won US $1,080,000 for
the win and moved to the top of the current 2015/16 USPGA Tour Money list
standings with US $1,080,000 earned from the one event he has played to date
this season so far. Kevin Na (USA) is second on that list with US $648,000
earned from the one event he has played to date this season so far. Emiliano
Grillo (Argentina) also earned 500 FedEx Cup Points for his efforts and moved
to the top of the current 2015/16 FedEx Cup Points list standings with 500
points earned from the one event he has played to date this season so far and
he leads Kevin Na (USA) by 200 points who is in second position with 300 FedEx
Cup points earned from the one event he has played to date this season so far. From
the one event Emiliano Grillo (Argentina) has played to date this season so far
he has made one cut and achieved one top ten finish that was the win this past
week. He will be happy with his four rounds this week that were all under par
especially his third round 65-7 which was blemish free and also his final round
69-3 and the birdie he made on the second playoff hole to win his maiden USPGA
Tour event!! Emiliano Grillo (Argentina) is riding a huge rich vein of form at
the moment having won his last two events being the Web.com Tour Championship
two weeks ago to gain his 2015/16 USPGA Tour card and the win this past week!!
I sure he has set himself up to become Rookie of the Year even at this early
stage of the season? And now he is in the 2016 Master Tournament, 2016 PGA
Championship and properly the 2016 US Open, Open Championship and all the 2016
WGC Events plus many other top USPGA Tour events if he can remain in the top
fifty in the world at the end of the 2015.
Emiliano Grillo
(Argentina) (born 14 September 1992) is an Argentine professional golfer who
plays on the USPGA Tour. Emiliano Grillo (Argentina) turned professional in
2011 and earned playing status on the European Tour via Qualifying School. He
finished in the top 10 in his first event, the 2012 Africa Open. He finished
the season in the top 100 of the Order of Merit. In February 2014, Emiliano Grillo
(Argentina) had his best finish to date on the European Tour, when he finished
runner-up behind Stephen Gallacher (Scotland) at the Omega Dubai Desert
Classic. Later in the season he finished eighth at the BMW
International Open and the BMW Masters, and eleventh at the Turkish Airlines
Open. He ended forty fourth on the European Tour Race to Dubai. He also won the
Visa Open de Argentina on the PGA Tour Latinoamérica. Emiliano Grillo
(Argentina) began the 2015 European Tour season with a third place at the Volvo
China Open, a fifth place at the Qatar Masters, a sixth place at the Open de
España and an eleventh place at the Shenzhen International.
He also finished second at the Puerto Rico Open on
the USPGA Tour, playing on a sponsor's exemption, and finished tenth at the
Barbasol Championship. This earned him a place in the 2015 Web.com
Tour Finals. He claimed a ninth place at the Hotel Fitness Championship, a
runner-up at the Small Business Connection Championship and a first place at
the Web.com Tour Championship. Therefore he finished second at the Finals money
list and got a card for the 2015/16 USPGA Tour. In his eighth career USPGA Tour
event and first as a member, Emiliano Grillo (Argentina) won the season-opening
Frys.com Open on the 2015/16 USPGA Tour, after beating veteran Kevin Na (USA)
in a sudden-death playoff. He made a 25-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole for
3-under-par 69, which was later tied by Kevin Na (USA). Emiliano Grillo
(Argentina) then missed a three-foot putt for victory on the first playoff
hole, but sealed the win on the second hole with a birdie after Kevin Na (USA) ended
up behind a tree and could only make bogey. The victory gained Emiliano Grillo
(Argentina) entry to his first Masters Tournament in 2016 and the 2016 PGA
Championship. Let’s hope he can maintain this form throughout the 2015/16
season and perhaps win his second event? I wish him all the best for the rest
of the 2015/16 USPGA Tour season.
Coming in solo second position at 273-15 and losing
on the second playoff hole was Kevin Na (USA); he earned US $648,000 for his
efforts and moved to second position on the current 2015/16 USPGA Tour Money
list standings with US $648,000 earned
from the one event he has played to date this season so far. He also earned 300
FedEx Cup points for his efforts and moved to second position on the current
2015/16 FedEx Cup Points list standings with 300 points earned from the one
event he has played to date this season so far. From the one event he has
played to date this season so far he has made one cut and achieved one top ten
finish that came this past week. He will be happy with his first and third
rounds that were both in the 60s especially his blemishe free 64-8 in the third
round!! But he will be just content with his second and final rounds that were
both in the low 70s and mad with how he played the two playoff holes to
virtually hand the tournament to Emiliano Grillo (Argentina)!! But on the other
hand he will be pleased with how he played so well to begin the season and gave
himself a chance to win. Kevin Sangwook
Na (USA) (born September 15, 1983) is a Korean American professional
golfer currently playing on the USPGA Tour. Born in Seoul, South Korea. Kevin
Na (USA) emigrated with his family to the United States when he was eight years
old, settling in southern California. He left Diamond Bar High School after his
junior year to play professional golf at age seventeen. Kevin Na (USA) has
played on the Asian Tour (with a win at the 2002 Volvo Masters of Asia),
European Tour and USPGA Tour. Kevin Na (USA) got his USPGA Tour card for the
2004 season. He finished third at the Southern Farm Bureau Classic and fourth
at the Honda Classic. In 2005 he finished second at the FBR Open and Chrysler
Classic of Tucson. He missed six months with a hand injury in 2006. In his
first start back, a rehab start on the Nationwide Tour, he won the Mark
Christopher Charity Classic. Kevin Na (USA) played on the USPGA Tour
in 2007 via a medical extension, and finished fourth at the Verizon Heritage.
In 2008 he was fourth at the FBR Open and Sony Open in Hawaii. He finished
third at the 2009 Players Championship and the FBR Open, fifth at the Sony Open
in Hawaii, Mayakoba Golf Classic and Reno-Tahoe Open. With nine top-10 finishes
and 14 top-25 finishes, he ranked in nineteenth place on the money list,
securing his entry to the Masters Tournament and the U.S. Open in 2010 for the
first time. In the 2010 season, Kevin Na (USA) finished second at the Arnold
Palmer Invitational and third at the BMW Championship. He placed 37th in season
earnings.
In February 2011, Kevin Na (USA) was in contention
to win his first USPGA Tour title at the Northern Trust Open. He entered the
final round in a tie for second at −9, one stroke behind Aaron Baddeley
(Australia). However a run of four bogeys in the first ten holes ended Kevin Na's
(USA) chances of victory. He would eventually fight back on the back nine and a
vital birdie on the par-five 17th sealed a third place finish, behind eventual
winner Aaron Baddeley (Australia) and Vijay Singh (Fiji). On April 14, 2011, Kevin
Na (USA) played the worst ever par four hole on the USPGA Tour since the tour
began recording hole-by-hole scores in 1983, making a 16 on the ninth hole at
the Valero Texas Open. Kevin Na (USA) needed extra shots after an unplayable
lie from his tee shot and was then given a two-stroke penalty after his ball
hit a tree and rebounded back onto him. It was initially scored as a 15 but
changed to 16 on review. Kevin Na (USA) ended up shooting an eight-over-par
round of 80, which saw him shoot four-under for his other 17 holes. In August
2011, Kevin Na (USA) finished tenth at the PGA Championship with a 72-69-70-67
score card. He also finished fifth at the Bob Hope Classic and Wells Fargo
Championship. On October 1, 2011, Kevin Na (USA) apparently whiffed his tee
shot on the par-4 15th hole in the third round of the Justin Timberlake
Shriners Hospitals for Children Open at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas, missing
high and to the outside of the ball. Tour officials, though, ruled Kevin Na
(USA) was not intending to hit the ball and did not count the swing as a
stroke, and Kevin Na (USA) finished with a 5-under 66 to remain tied for the
tournament lead. The following day, Kevin Na (USA) earned his first USPGA Tour
victory at the 211th attempt, having been on tour for eight years. He shot a
final round 65 with birdies at 15, 16 and 17 to win by two strokes from Nick
Watney (USA) and earn US $792,000 in prize money. Kevin Na (USA) also broke the
tournament scoring record of 21-under par when he finished the week at 23-under
par. This victory earned Kevin Na (USA) a two year exemption on tour. He ranked
30th in season earnings. During the 2012 PGA Tour season, Kevin Na (South
Korea) finished fourth at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, fifth at the Phoenix
Open and AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, seventh at the Players
Championship and twelfth at Masters Tournament.
A back injury limited Kevin Na (USA) to eight starts
in early 2013. After rehabbing, he made a comeback in October in his first USPGA
Tour start since April with a third place finish at the Frys.com Open. Kevin Na
(USA) was given 18 starts on a medical extension, but needed only seven to
remain on the USPGA Tour. In 2014 he finished second at the Memorial Tournament
and Valspar Championship, third at the Frys.com Open, fourth at the AT&T
Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, ninth at The Barclays and twelfth at the U.S.
Open. He finished twentieth in season earnings. Kevin Na (USA) lost in a
sudden-death playoff to Emiliano Grillo (Argentina) at the 2015/16 PGA Tour
season opening Frys.com Open. After both players finished at 15-under-par,
Emiliano Grillo (Argentina) won the event with a birdie on the second extra
hole. Kevin Na (USA) hit his second shot to the par-five 18th off-line and was
trapped behind a tree, which resulted in a bogey. This allowed Emiliano Grillo (Argentina)
to two-putt out for the victory. Kevin Na (USA) is now 0 for 3 in USPGA Tour
sudden-death playoffs. Kevin Na (USA) is a naturalized American citizen, and
lives in Las Vegas, Nevada. He has also achieved one top ten finish
in a major championship that came at the 2011 PGA Championship where he tied
for tenth. Let’s hope he can continue on this form for the rest of the 2015/16
USPGA Tour season and achieve his second win. I wish him all the best for the
rest of the 2015/16 USPGA Tour season.
Rounding out the top five in tied for third position
at 274-14 after 72 holes was Jason Bohn (USA); he earned US $312,000 for his
efforts and moved to third equal position on the current 2015/16 USPGA Tour
Money list standings with US $312,000 earned from the one event he has played
to date this season so far. He also earned 145 FedEx Cup Points for his efforts
and moved to third equal position on the current 2015/16 FedEx Cup Points list
standings with 145 points earned from the one event he has played to date this
season so far. From the one event he has played to date this season so far he
has made one cut and achieved one top ten finish that came this past week. He
will be happy with his second and third rounds that were both in the 60s
especially his 64-8 in the third round that saw him make nine birdies!! But he
will be just content with his first and final rounds that were both in the low
70s and he will be disappointed he hit his third shot chip fat on the par five,
sixteenth hole and made a bogey when he was in great position after two shots
to make a birdie!! And also disappointed that his birdie putt to join the playoff
on the seventy second hole just missed!! But on the other hand he will be
pleased he was able to put himself in contention this early in the season. Jason Duehn Bohn (USA) (born April 24,
1973) is an American professional golfer who currently plays on the USPGA Tour.
Jason Bohn (USA) was born in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. In 1992, while a
sophomore on the Alabama golf team, Jason Bohn (USA) was playing in a charity
fund-raiser in Tuscaloosa when he made a hole-in-one worth US $1 million. Jason
Bohn (USA) dropped his amateur status and golf scholarship on the spot and
turned professional, as USGA rules did not carry an exemption for aces scored
in the middle of regular golf rounds at the time, which the USGA adopted in
2006. He graduated from Alabama in 1995. While playing the Canadian
Tour, Jason Bohn (USA) shot a 58 to win the 2001 Bayer Championship. He also
played the Nationwide Tour before earning promotion to the USPGA Tour, where he
has played since 2004. In 2005 he won the USPGA Tour's B.C. Open. During the
2009 season Jason Bohn (USA) lost in a playoff at the Wyndham Championship
along with Kevin Stadler (USA) to Ryan Moore (USA). In April 2010, Jason Bohn (USA)
won the 2010 Zurich Classic of New Orleans wire to wire, when he birdied three
of the last four holes to win by two shots. At the Greenbrier Classic in July
2015, Jason Bohn (USA) shot a nine under par 61 during the third round that
moved him from the cutline into the co-lead entering the final round. The round
of 61 was Jason Bohn's (USA) lowest ever career round on the USPGA Tour. He
also had his best FedEx Cup finish of fortieth. Let’s hope he can achieve his
third USPGA Tour event win this season. I wish him all the best for the rest of
the 2015/16 USPGA Tour season.
Also tied for third position was Justin Thomas
(USA); he too earned US $312,000 for his efforts and moved to third equal
position on the current 2015/16 USPGA Tour Money list standings with US $312,000
earned from the one event he has played to date this season so far. He also
earned 145 FedEx Cup Points for his efforts and moved to third equal position
on the current 2015/16 FedEx Cup Points list standings with 145 points earned
from the one event he has played to date this season so far. From the one event
he has played to date this season so far he has made one cut and achieved one
top ten finish that came this week. He will be happy with his four rounds this
week that were all under par especially his 66-6 in the first round!! But he
will be disappointed he wasn’t able to birdie the seventy second hole and make
it into the playoff!! And he will be pleased he has made such a good start to
the season after having a brilliant rookie season in the 2015/16 USPGA Tour
season. Justin Thomas (USA) (born
April 29, 1993) is an American professional golfer. Justin Thomas (USA) was
born in Louisville, Kentucky and graduated from St. Xavier High School in 2011.
He played college golf at the University of Alabama where he won six times.
He also played on the 2013 NCAA Division I Championship team. He won the
Haskins Award in 2012 as the most outstanding collegiate golfer. As an amateur,
Justin Thomas (USA) played in the 2009 Wyndham Championship on the USPGA Tour
where he became the third youngest golfer to make the cut in a USPGA Tour
event, aged 16 years, 3 months and 24 days. Justin Thomas (USA) turned
professional in 2013 and earned his tour card on the Web.com Tour through
qualifying school. He won his first professional event at the 2014 Nationwide
Children's Hospital Championship. He has played several USPGA Tour events with
his best finish a tied for fourth at the 2015 Quicken Loans National. Justin Thomas
(USA) finished fifth in the 2014 Web.com Tour regular season, and third after
the Web.com Tour Finals, to earn his USPGA Tour card for the 2014–15 season. In
2015, Justin Thomas (USA) collected seven top-10s and 15 top-25s, with fourth
place finishes at the Quicken Loans National and Sanderson Farms Championship
as best results. He finished thirty second at the USPGA Tour's FedEx Cup,
losing the Rookie of the Year award to Daniel Berger (USA). His maiden USPGA
Tour win must be coming very soon and perhaps it will happen in the 2015 part
of the 2015/16 USPGA Tour season? I wish him all the best for the rest of the
2015/16 USPGA Tour season.
The final player to tie for third position was
Tyrone Van Aswegen (RSA); he too earned US $312,000 for his efforts and moved
to third equal position on the current 2015/16 USPGA Tour Money list standings
with US $312,000 earned from the one event he has played to date this season so
far. He also earned 145 FedEx Cup Points for his efforts and moved to third
equal position on the current 2015/16 FedEx Cup Points list standings with 145
points earned from the one event he has played to date this season so far. From
the one event he has played to date this season so far he has made one cut and
achieved one top ten finish that came this week. He will be happy with his four
rounds this week that were all in the 60s and he was the only player in the
field to achieve that and especially his 68-4 in the second round that was
blemish free and his 68-4 in the final round!! And he was very lucky he even
got to play the final round because he woke in the morning of the final round
with feeling dizzy and displaying symptoms of vertigo and was taken to the ER
and spent two hours receiving IV fluids to make him feel better and was only
discharged an hour before his tee time which he was able to make and that was
only because a half hour fog delay that put tee times back a half hour!! Tyrone van Aswegen (RSA) (born 6
January 1982) is a South African professional golfer who plays on the USPGA
Tour. Tyrone Van Aswegen (RSA) was
born in Johannesburg, South Africa. He played in college at Oklahoma City
University from 2000 to 2004, where he was a three-time NAIA All-American, led
OCU to four NAIA team championships, and won seven times, including the 2002
individual national title.Tyrone Van
Aswegen (RSA) turned pro in 2004 after graduation, and began playing on the
Sunshine Tour. He won twice on that tour in 2008, and finished a career-best
seventh on the Order of Merit in 2009. He tied for 74th at the 2010 PGA Tour
Qualifying Tournament, which gave him status for 2011 on the Web.com Tour (then
known as the Nationwide Tour). After three seasons on the Web.com Tour, Tyrone van Aswegen (RSA) earned his USPGA
Tour card for the first time at the inaugural 2013 Web.com Tour Finals. In his
2014 rookie season on the USPGA Tour, Tyrone
van Aswegen (RSA) finished 144th in the FedEx Cup and returned to the
Web.com Tour Finals. He regained his card for 2015, but a poor season in which
he finished 191st in the FedEx Cup necessitated another return to the Finals,
through which he again regained his card. His best finish on the USPGA Tour is
a tied for fifteenth at the 2015 Barracuda Championship. His best finish on the
Web.com Tour is tied for third at the 2009 Soboba Classic. Tyrone Van Aswegen (RSA) became a
United States citizen in 2013. Let’s hope this finish can spur him
onto keeping his USPGA Tour card for the 2016/17 season. I wish him all the
best for the rest of the 2015/16 USPGA Tour season.
Next week the USPGA Tour and FedEx Cup has the second
event of the 2015/16 season and it heads to the State of Nevada for the
Shriners Hospitals for Children Open and it is played on the TPC
Summerlin, Las Vegas, Nevada. It carries a huge prize purse of US
$6,400,000 for the taking and Ben Martin (USA) is the defending champion and
will be keen to defend his title. Danny Lee (NZL) will properly play and Tim
Wilkinson (NZL) will be hopeful to gain a start. It starts on Thursday 22nd
October and I will report back who won the trophy next week.
