Thames Golf Club News - 5th June 2012

Thames Golf Club – Long Tee Challenge
On Thursday 31st May a small field of 13 players played in the Thames Wholesale Fisheries Long Tee Challenge in fine sunny weather. There were visitors from Whangamata, Waihi and Tahuna. In the Men’s division, Tom Handley (Thames) scored 78 off his 13 handicap and returned 41 Stableford points to win the best Fish Pack. He also had the best gross round of the day. In the Ladies Division, Kay Maxwell (Thames) won with 26 Stableford points.

Men’s: Tom Handley 41, Keith Adams (Whangamata) 38, Brian Meek 37, Bill Newland (Waihi) 35 and David Gear (Waihi) 35.
Two’s: There were none
Hidden Hole’s: Bill Newland (Waihi) had 11 points to take the Cash.
Women’s: Kay Maxwell 26 and Jessie Gear (Waihi) 22
Two’s: There were none.
Hidden Hole’s: Jessie Gear (Waihi) had 7 points to win the Cash.

Thames Golf Club – Saturday Scramble
On Saturday 2nd June (Queens Birthday Weekend) 24 players played in a nett scramble in conjunction with the quarter finals of the Petley Cup 4BBB. It was a fine sunny day after a cool start. Tom Handley certainly found the conditions to his liking scoring 74 off his 12 handicap and returned a 62 nett to win the scramble. He also beat his age for the first time in his career which is a great achievement. Steve Gooder returned the best gross score of the day which was a one over par 71.

Men’s: Tom Handley 62, Neil Hall 63, Bill Watene 67, Murray Newby 68, Steve Gooder 68, Greg Overend 68, Jamie Smith 70, Doug Way 71, Bob Hind 72, Darrin Marshall 73, David Clarke 73 and Geoffrey Sun 73.
Two’s: Stan Kendall on the 8th hole and Darrin Marshall on the 14th hole.
Hidden Hole’s: Murray Newby, Neil Hall and Bill Watene all had 12 points to share the Cash. There were also the two remaining quarter final Petley Cup 4BBB matches played. Greg Overend/Neil Hall defeated Geoffrey Sun/Les Wairepo 2&1 and Bob Carr/Stan Kendall defeated Darrin Marshall/Geoff Page. So the Semi – Finals of the Petley Cup 4BBB are Greg Overend/Neil Hall verse Ian Fielder/Mark Browne and Bob Carr/Stan Kendall verse Richard Blight/Bill Watene. Next Saturday (9th June) is the Semi – Finals of the Petley Cup 4BBB in conjunction with the usual Saturday Scramble.

Thames Golf Club – Queens Birthday Scramble
On Monday 4th June, 30 players played in the Queen’s Birthday Scramble. It was a fine day and the greens were putting very true and fast. Lee Thompson scored 75 off his 9 handicap and retuned 40 Stableford points to win the Men’s Scramble. In the Ladies scramble, Esther Hall scored 91 off her 19 handicap and returned 36 Stableford points to win. Best gross scored on the day was 74 returned by Dale McAuley.

Two’s: Richard Elgie on the 1st hole, Brian Meek on the 8th hole and Jamie Smith and Lee Thompson on the 14th hole.
Hidden Hole’s: Herb Mabey and Brain Meek had 11 points to share the cash.
Women’s: Esther Hall 36 and Jill Stent 35.
Two’s: There were none
Hidden Hole’s: Esther Hall won them with 8 points.
